Surely there's room for both of these two daring 3x8 reinventors to show the rest of us timid (purists?) souls how to go about remaking the cars we own and love. I, for one (and I hope I'm not alone), want to see played out from begining to end these two wonderful projects to their completion. I want to learn and vicariously enjoy the daring and expertise of Greg and Mark as they play with their toys. So, I urge Mark to continue with this thread of his and ask Greg to start one of his own with details, specs, pictures, musings and even calls for help. Since I don't have the welding, machining, fabricating skills that Mark does have to remake a Ferrari V-12, I may draw some secret comfort in thinking that perhaps I just might, maybe, possibly, perhaps, some day, be able to stuff a warmed over Northstar (or even small block like Norwood did once upon a time), in an engineless 3x8. C'mon, show us how it's done!

I made the second rail today. I think with all the carving I did on it I made about 15 lbs of clips....the pile on the floor is pretty big. I thought I'd get it done during the week, but other things got in the way. Nothing welded yet, but it's 1 step closer.

tomorrow will probably be a wash....I have to take grandma to the airport, then Lana and I are on our own with the little one. hopefully there will still be car time. Lana promised 1 day per weekend if I watch him the other day so she's free.....but usually it doesn't work exactly the way it's planned.

    Hi Mike,
Dream project you have there! You're one brave and talented man.
I almost bought one of the original 308 V12 cars when it was in Germany about a decade ago. A friend also worked on one of the V12 308s (he's got some neat pics).
Question: The V12 is happier at lower cruising RPMs than the V8. How will you deal with this with the v8 gearbox 20mph/1000 rpm running?
    Cheers!

I think he mentioned in a previous post about swapping the top and bottom transfer gears to slow the gear box RPM's and hopefully reducing torque loads, (If I read that correctly)

As mentioned I am going to swap the transfer gears that will drop the rpm at any speed by 23%. It looks like I'll re-cut the clutch shaft to accept the trans gear up top. Then down on the bottom I'll make a new hub to extend the trans shaft and add an outer bearing and cut the engine gear out to fit over it with some kind of spline and nut arrangement....at least that's the plan.

The V12 will have EXACTLY the same shape/rpm power curve that the V8 had so it's happy at the same rpms the V8 was. The difference it that the power/torque curves will be basically double what the stock V8 had, so there will be way more power/torque available in the lower gear than the tires could ever handle which seems like a waste and makes the car hard to drive. That is exactly the situation I had with the my supercharged V8 and the V12 should be nearly the same with a bit less torque down low and a bit more hp up top.

The gear change will put 1st gear about 3/4 of the way to where 2nd gear is currently and that should be just about right. With the supercharged V8 I only used 1st gear to idle around parking lots. For driving I just started in 2nd gear .....or 3rd if I was feeling really lazy and don't bother shifting at all around town....it had that much torque. For quick starts 2nd gear was much better than 1st because I could at least modulate the wheel spin. It launched good in 3rd too (with the carbon clutch, the kevlar clutch fried) but that required a pretty serious hard launch, I'm certain the best 0-60 times would have been a 3rd gear launch with street traction, but 2nd would probably be best at the drag strip all covered with rubber and traction compound.

    Art,
I did a rough test fit back in post 572 blocking it into the forward and lowered position I settled on and everything looked good.

I want to put it back in and have another look now that I will have a more accurate placement and check things like the frame clearance for the oil pan extension and gas tank and frame clearance for the bell housing.

I’m going to try to do the test fit during the week, I need to pull the jig plates off and get the mount back on the trans so it’ll take 2-3 hours to get everything back in the car. I have the evening shift watching the little monster so I might not have time until next Sunday.

I'll have to get online and see if I can find the right size welding helmet and gloves :)

If Lana ever caught me with the baby down in the shop....I don't even want to think about it......

oh....I don't even like to think about how long this is going to take. I think spring 09 is reasonable at the rate I’m going now. There is talk that grandma will come back which would speed things up, but right now I’m limited to 4-6 hours a week were it was more like 10-15 when grandma was visiting. If the little ones sleeping habits improve, the time line will get shorter I guess.
