How many miles per year do you put on your Ferrari?

Bought my CS in August '06 with 4,900 miles. It currently has 15,600 miles with no issues. The car gets stronger everyday.

 

I have put 6k on my 360 in the first year of ownership. No commuter driving, I have gone to some shows that added the miles. No problems!!! I have also done some track events, so I have had to pay extra for that maintenance, more frequent oil change, brake flush and so on.

Its a car, its meant to be driven!! Enjoy or the next owner will at your expense!

My 02 360 spider F1 is a daily driver so long as its not raining or wet - put 13K+ miles on it this past year with no problems. Probably will do about the same again this year unless I get a gallardo spider which I've been thinking about. Bought it used on ebay with 4.5K miles in Feb. 2007, it has 17K+ miles now. I keep up with the scheduled maintenance however and had the major belt/tensioner service done when I got the car. Other than that, did regular oil changes and went through a set of tires but car has been problem free for me. My driving style is fairly soft on the car for what it is capable of, but I usually get it up to 7-8K RPMS after warm up on most drives, but much of my driving is around town, some highway, and occasional trips to NY from Boston area and back. No track or street racing. I imagine the 430 would be just as reliable.

Driving it this much however diminishes the wow factor a little bit for me, somtimes more than others. You sort of get used to it and at times it is just a car to get from here to there on some days (al be it a very nice car for that purpose). When daily driving it, I find I think about it as special for the first few minutes of the ride, but then my ADHD kicks in and other thoughts take over about other stuff in your life and you end up at your destination without thinking too much about the car or driving. On the other hand, after work on a summer evening or when a sunny Friday comes, you snap out of the day to day and blow off your afternoon appointments and drive the hell out of it. To log high miles it also helps to have friends with nice cars as well since you tend to caravan around and find places to go with your cars like golfing, beach, casino, etc. I have been neglecting my 98 Porsche 993 cab and only drove it a handful of times last year.

 

I put about 3500 miles per year on my 360 spider mainly Sunday drives and the occasional drive to the office.

 

No track worries, just the maintenance, brake flush, oil, gear box fluid change. I switched to the porterfield R4 pads after the oem's were spent. Nice brake pad, half the cost and very effective pad! Lots of things depend on how hard you drive the car and how often. Nice thing is you don't have a belt to worry about, but you should have the chain inspected after a while I would imagine. I know the Ferrari Challenge F430 see a minor rebuild every 2 races, vlave guides and so on.
Really, no worries, just keep it on the pavement and have fun!!!!!!!!!!! I am sure in Race mode the shifts and the handeling would be awesome!!!!!!!!

New 07 F430 Spider...got it the end of December...my daily driver..my guess...15K per year....minimum!

 

At what point does the mileage become "too high"? Meaning...would any of you consider a 360 with 50k miles? Price?

 

I know it is hard to compare a 360 to a regular car, but I think at 50,000 miles you would be looking at a residual value about half of a 2,000 to 3,000 mile car based on the current asking prices for the 120 360 Modena's on autotrader.com. The low mileage cars have asking prices up to 179,900 for a 2004 with 3,005 miles whie the highest mileage car I could find has an asking price of 99,988 with 41,900 miles on a 1999 360 Modena. Assuming these cars were purchased for around 200,000 when new a 50% residual value at 8 years old with 50,000 miles is much better than the usual 50% residual value on a regular car at 3 years 36,000 miles. Factor in another 20,000 for maintenance and tires to get to 50,000 miles.

I bought a 2004 360 Spider F1 in 2/07 with 7,500 miles for $180,000 and now I am up to 11,000 miles. I have 10 cars to choose from and the more I drive the 360 the more I think it would be a great daily driver.

My greatest regret (during my past ownership of F-Cars) was that I didn't drive them enough. Whatever F-Car I get next, rest assured that it will be driven daily!

 

I'm now doing 1k miles a month and the car only gets better.

As for residuals, the trend for low mileage cars is irrational and should be reversed. A correctly maintained high mileage car will have all its issues sorted out and will be running optimally for the next owner. There is a lot of rubber in the car - suspension, seals, hoses etc. Rubber is a natural product and needs to be exercised. If it sits static for years and is not regularly flexed it will dry out, harden or crack at the edges.

I would rather buy a high mileage car with its renewable parts renewed than a low mileage car that is old and unused.

 

My CS had 2600 miles on it when I bouight it in Nov, 2005 and it now has 8600. So I guess I am using it at a rate of 2500/yr.

 

14000 miles first year on my first Ferrari, a 1999 360. My next 5 Fcars about 3000 per year. I just hated getting even the smallest blemish on them so driving in inclement weather was out. That only leaves room for about 3000/year here in Pennsylvania.

 

Yeah, but you're not going to do it.......and what I mean by that is as long as there is a ton of 7-8 year old cars with less than 15k miles, the perception will continue.


On how much a 50k mile car is worth, if I was presented a well cared for 2000 360 with 50k miles I think a price that would stand out for me is if it was in line with the next model down (355). So if a sale could be had at $75k, I'd be breaking my piggy bank. Otherwise I buy the car with 15k miles for $95k.

 

I do about 8K miles/year. Just keep in mind that Ferraris are by no means Hondas. If you drive the car 8-10k miles/year, you are bound to have more service costs than if you drove 2k/year. I've calculated about $1-1.10/M of service costs over that last 2 years on my 00 coupe.

 

I bought my '02 360 in mid-March 2007 with 692 miles on it. The odometer just hit the 3k mark. I generally expected to drive it about 3k miles per year, I'm running a little under that, but in any case at this pace or even higher I will always have a "low mileage" car because I bought it at 4.5-yrs old with so few miles on it.

 

Wow... Brian, where did you find a 5-year old car with only 692 miles on the speed-o. Quite a find!

Hey Frank - the car was actually owned by a co-worker of mine. He's a wealthy guy with a reasonably large car collection. This car happened to stay on his farm in MD (he lives in NYC) which he didn't get to very often. A mutual co-worker and friend pursuaded him to sell it so it wouldn't sit and waste away. That mutual friend knew I was waiting for the new Turbo Cab to be released, and he called me and insisted that I should take a serious look at this car at almost the exact price as the Turbo. I looked, I bought immediately. I had the fluids and belts done (which were techinically overdue based on time) and a seized tensioner bearing replaced, clear-bra applied to the whole front end, and the car has functioned flawlessly. Proof that it IS possible for a low-mileage car to work out.

I bought a Capristo Level II late last year but haven't installed it yet. I'm going to get it done in early spring and do a full detail at the same time.

400 miles on my spider in the week I have owned. I think that is largely the "new toy effect". Plan is ~5k per year

 

Veru true, they're like aircrafts that has to be serviced regularly. But, like I said before man, I dont let my cars dictate my life. I wont be a slave to my cars anymore. To each his/her own I guess.
