Hi all, I live in Colorado and have never been to Houston. Looks like I'll be going to MD Anderson for my son's therapy in a couple weeks. He's 2 years old, and it will be just he and I. Does anyone know the area around the center? Are there parks around? Any ideas for furnished apartments? Anyone ever had treatment there? Any insights at all would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Matt

Matt, MD Anderson is the best cancer facility in the world, hands down. Your son will be in terrific hands there.

MD Anderson is located in the heart of the medical center and Hermann Park and the Houston Zoo are only blocks away.

Im sure if you searched on apartmentfinder or something for a furnised apartment in the med center, you will have no problem finding one!

Just a few after a quick search, but you might try and find an apartment locator so they could find you specifically what you want.. price, ammenities, etc

Matt, unfortunately I've spent a lot of time in the medical center with my daughter (much of it at Texas Children's Cancer Center) and have a number of resources that would probably be helpful to you, including on the Medical Center in general, as well as apartments and other long-term living arrangements. There is also a Ronald McDonald House in the area that offers a very cheap and wonderful place to stay. Please call me, 713-291-4915, and I will be more than happy to help in any way I can!

Also there is the Jesse Jones Rotary House (1600 Holcombe Blvd. 1-800-847-5783) which is a very inexpensive hotel that is an extended stay type with kitchens that is physically attached to the hospital. It's only available to MDA patients. They have an onsite lab and help set appointments etc. My wife and I spent many long weekends there when she was going through her Hodgkins treatment in '06/'07. My wife is also an Oncology RN for the last 8+ 6 of those at a Childrens Hospital, so fell free to PM any questions. Hope everything goes well!!

I live about 5 minutes from the Medical Center. Lots of apartments within minutes of the center. Most of which I would assume could be furnished upon rental.

I was a fairly regular patient at Texas Childrens as I child. Always a positive experience from what I remember.

I'm almost certain my cousin still work in the Phyiscal Therapy area at Texas Childrens. She works on new borns on up to pre-teens. I know I'm biased being her cousin, but she has the best attitude dealing with families and their kids.

Thank you all for the replies! I did check with a couple appartment finders, but you guys still managed to come up with some new ones to try. I was hoping for something like the Jesse Jones Rotary House, which neither the appartment finders nor the social worker had mentioned, so big thanks to Dave for that.

Glad to hear there are things to do while we're down there, we'll be able to get out a little during our stay. We're a little stir crazy as it is since we're buried in 3 feet of snow here, it will be nice to be in Houston for the rest of the winter! We're leaving on the 15th, so if you come up with anything else, please chime in! Thanks again, Matt

Since my cousin does know doctors in the medical center, if you have any issues or just questions about them I could find out if she knows them and what she thinks of them. That is if you run into problems, but you shouldn't have that issue.

My prayers are with you and your son. Same to lil squid and his daughter.

God willing and things get well enough with your son, we could have a meet and raise money for a charity?

Again, thanks! I have looked into the Ronald McDonald house, and still consider it an option, but the one in Houston, as well as the one here in Denver, have communal living areas including the kitchen. That makes me a little nervous since Tucker will be immunosuppressed during times of his treatment. I am hoping to get an appartment with a kitchen, but beggars can't be choosers. I didn't get a chance to make all the calls I wanted to today, but hopefully will be able to find a place tomorrow.

Very kind of you to offer a fund raiser - it has been suggested to us locally, too. I just can't get comfortable with the idea of receiving charity instead of giving it. I'm sure you know what I mean. Thanks, though! :)

Once you are here, let me know as well.......we'll try to keep him entertained, and you may need a little support yourself, to take a break from it all..

Joining the others in saying it's a world class facility and wishing you the best of results.......
