air filter cover nuts

I used Nylon nuts because the correct ones vibrate themselves off the car. Function over Style, for me.

 

It can vary a bit by year, but typically for a carb GTB you want the domed version, not the flat ones. IMPORTANT, get the thick black rubber fender washers that go with them. They prevent them from coming loose like what happened to Yelcab. Don't reuse the old washers with new nuts. The hard old rubber will transmit the vibration through and cause them to work loose more easily. Soft new ones allow you to tighten them better.

 

I think I still have a couple extra of the non-domed top nuts if you need them. I'll look for them tonight, shoot me a PM if you want them.

 

Actually I have four of the domed nuts if you'd like them. Sorry I remembered wrong but I did find them!

Believe it or not, I had luck finding these at an independent mechanic's shop... I had my car in for some minor checkup-type thing, and as we were standing by the back of my car (engine cover open), I said, "Oh....and do you know where I can find *those* online," pointing to the knurled thumbnuts. He laughs, walks about 4 steps to a little chest of drawers on his workbench, pulls open a drawer full of 'em.

"Here," he said.

Philip started the thread and PM'd me earlier about the nuts. It looks like they will work for his car so if he wants them he gets first shot. If not I'll let you know Bill. Just so you guys know though I found them at Ferrari UK when I bought them. I don't know if they have more in stock though.

Edit: I'm not sure what the finish is on these, they are silver but it's not chrome. Looks like maybe a zinc plating or something.

The slightly domed nut with the angled serrations are typically seen on Dino's and Daytonas from the early 70's and were replaced for more rectangular ones with the vertical serrations by the time the 308 was made. Early 308's got the nuts like the ones on the left while later carbed ones got the conical ones (not pictured on the this thread). I have often been told that US market cars only got the coned ones but I have not found any evidence to support that. The best info I have is that the coned ones were used only on the US market cars once catalysts started being fitted. As with all things Ferrari nothing is absolute.

What I think are the 3 originals on my GT4 are brass, and there's supposed to be a rubber washer under them to prevent them from vibrating off. I've been told they still vibrate off. Well, they do, as my brand new knurled silver ones did just that (I didn't know about the rubber washer), so now they're nylock because without a shield panel on the back of the timing belts, I sure don't want one of those down in there.

I use the knurled nuts with rubber washer for 8-9 yrs. never a problem
