So.. I'm getting a little black smoke and popping at cold start - I think my injectors are filthy. The car sat for a while, with old gas in it. I drove it through most of last summer but when my clutch hydraulics failed, I decided to do a lot of much needed maintenance.

Anyway, does anyone know a good method / products to do this very thoroughly? This is for my 82 Mondial 8.

    THx!

Hi, I just replaced the injectors on my Mondy QV. They were inexpensive and simple to change. Noticeable performance improvement. Good Luck

+1, I did that last year too. If the injectors are the originals, it's time to just replace them, if they are the newer brass versions, then just cleaning them would be in order. (a bottle of Techron injector cleaner might be enough to clean them)

Thanks guys, great info! They are indeed the original injectors. Where did you source yours?

They are 380/500 mercedes injectors. Any Bosch distributor will have them. I would reccomend Mike at IPCO 770-381-1114.

There are companies that do just cleaning, testing and calibrating injectors. As expensive as most injectors are it is worth sending them off to be professionally cleaned. if I locate that one company that I saw in GRM I will pass it on.

Not in the instance of a 1980's vintage 308/328/Mondial or Testrarossa. At that time, Bosch made the injectors from steel, and with age, have many problems with rust and spray pattern problems. Since new ones (when purchased online) are only around $30 each, it is better to just replace them with the updated brass versions, which solve the problem once and for all.

Hate to be a parrot but Dave Helms- a well respected mechanic cleaned my stainless injectors and showed me the much improved spray pattern. He stated the brass injectors are "junk" and simply to clean the SS ones.

    Ok, here we go.........

I know I'm going to probably going to want to shoot myself for asking this......

    Brass vs. SS.

What are the Pro's and Con's of each?

Should probably be Brass vs. Steel. I'm pretty sure the non-brass are not Stainless Steel although the bits inside of both are likely steel or stainless steel.

I'd also like to know why the brass may be considered inferior (after I just got done installing all brass ones on my car.

    Certainly they look prettier :)

    Weapons loaded?

    Well,

Hey, I sparked a pretty good discussion! :) Thanks for the info - I'll probably just replace mine - this is great information. I KNEW that there was probably a bosch part that was right one..

Is there a catalog / resource of some kind that shows all the parts that Ferrari used from other cars? You know, like these injectors, clutch hydraulics, caps / rotors, you name it.. seems everything fits a different car, thus making these things less expensive to maintain..

Thank you thank you thank you! So glad I found this place.

I'm also wondering... I haven't tried to study the design of these injectors, but if the fuel "orifice" (if that's the correct term) is also brass in newer ones, it would seem the brass would erode much faster than steel ones. But perhaps steel corrosion is a tradeoff you pay for lower erosion. I'd like to hear from Dave Helms or others who have seen, inspected, and changed many of these. Thanks. :)

There is a "sticky" in the 308/Mondial section.

regarding the need to change fuel injectors on the 3x8's.
what are the common symptoms which might lead one to make the change?
is it an obvious change in engine behavior or something more subtle or simply
a consequence of age and the logical preventative maintenance?

It would apply to any fuel injector on any car but..... if it leaks/drips when the engine is shut off that could cause flooding, black smoke on start-up, running rich maybe leading to overheating cat(s). Full blockage or serious partial blockage would lead to lean running in that cylinder which would cause other problems and both could be felt as the engine being down on power and smoothness.

More likely is probably deterioration with age due to wear and build-up of tiny crud at the nozzle which can cause a poor spray pattern. This would result in less than ideal atomization of the fuel and would no doubt be pretty subtle and hard to pin down. You would really have to pull the injectors and check the spray pattern and flow rate.
