    Can someone tell me what the markings are on the flywheel? It is very hard to tell what is on there now. I see PM|1-4 and PM|5-8 but there are others markings I cannot discern. If you can list them in order of appeance, that would be great.

    Thanks,

    You need to study up on your Italiano ;). Not sure that a 328 is exactly like this, but its ignition brother, the TR, has --

    order from least advanced to most advanced
    CS = exhaust closes (a little after TDC)
    PM = TDC
    AF = fixed advance at idle (a little before TDC)
    AA = intake opens (maybe a little before AF)
    A5 = advance at 5000 RPM (something like 30 deg before TDC)

    the other abbreviations would be
    CA = intake closes
    AS = exhaust opens
    but not shown on the flywheel.

    PM 1-4 is the mark you want to be on to start any work. Make sure you are on PM 1-4 and cyl. 1 is at the top of it's travel.

    Since nobody else mentioned it...... PM stands for Punto Morto..... "dead point" as in: the position/point where the piston is neither moving up or down with the crankshaft being turned. Of course in this case they mean at the top of travel (not bottom dead center).

    If it's just dirty / rusty this won't apply, but if only the top part of the letters are visible its probably because the flywheel has been machined a few times ( ie now thinner).

    Take a little white paint on your finger and rub it in the marks, then wipe it off with a cloth. The paint stays only in the little grooves and makes the letters and numbers much easier to see. If it is oily/greasy, you might want to wipe it clean with a paint solvent first.

    I think cylinder 1 will always be at the top when PM 1-4 is lined up but it could be Compression stroke or Exhaust stroke.

    An easy way to find the PM1-4 mark is to remove the oil filler cap and rotate the engine until the visable cam timing marks line-up. At this point PM1-4 should be right there.

    That's an easy and a good idea Mark, Would this be the same for the QVs'?

    It should be, as this is the case even with my "old" 2V carb 308...
