Wish someone would have told me that BEFORE i went to college.

 

w00t, I got a letter today saying I have also been accepted into the honors program. Naturally, you have to maintain a 3.3GPA everywhere except my intended major, EE, which is 3.5 . Oh well, still very excited!

 

My son got into Georgia Tech today. Aerospace Engineering. Going to be a rocket scientist. Actually he wants to do aerodynamics for an F1 team.

 

Spanish isn't bad, but 'anyone' can do Spanish - and they do.

But few people can master Chinese or Russian, that's where I was coming from.
If you work for a business that wants to do work in Russia, you may very well be 'Da Man'.

I know a guy that commutes from Nebraska to Russia and Czech....lovakia on a monthly basis, and he's a
mechanical engineer.

 

Yeah, you and me both.

The first year in College I NEVER studied and got stuck on academic probation.
The following year I studied a teeny bit and earned a shade above a 3.25 for the year.

It makes me sick to know if I had studied for just 2 measily hours a night how well I could have done, and how much more of a different position I would be in today.
But back then, I was great friends with Jack, Johnny, Jim and Ron Rico... that was a long time ago..

If you have any work ethic at all, you'll be fine with those requirements. I spend a ~4-5 hours a day studying for my financial engineering major, and I have a 4.0. I hope you don't turn into a "bro" where all you do is drink your ass off and beg people like me for tutoring the morning of an exam.

 

Hah! No kidding, it's amazing what a little bit of studying can do for your tests. Me and jack became very good friends also! Ah well, live and learn.

 

He won't be seeing any while in Chambana, well except for visits from Michael Jordan.
(Yes, I know what you meant)

i've got a friend that came here from the ukraine when he was in the second grade, now he's studying to become a translator, appearantly there's some pretty good money in that field, but the trick is, like whisky said, to find a language that isn't as major as spanish.

 

Congratulations. I went and got my undergraduate degree there in the college of business. The engineering campus is brand new, and simply amazing. I knew a couple of straight A Electrical Engineering majors and they generally studied 10 hours a day on top of classes. They came from high academic discipline families where they were raised to study like it was a job. They always ran circles and destroyed the curves in any of the business classes they would drop in. Totally different level.

Not to intimidate you, but go in there with your head on straight and your seatbelt fastened - it is a no messing around type of major.

P.S. My friends are 5 years out of school and got into both Standford and Harvard - and both have recently taken jobs in the 15X,XXX salary range with large bonus potential. Not bad at all for two guys just under 30. And in addition to that they made some lifelong connections that will certainly lead to other great opportunities in the start-up area.

 

LOL!! I would think that 1960's British Automotive Electronics would give more job security though.

Congrats on getting in to your number one choice. Don't sluff off the rest of High School though, I would have my senior year of high school back.

Two pieces of advice:
1) Don't party too hard. Trust me on that one!
2) If you want to learn a language, go with Spanish. It's the 2nd most commonly spoken language in the U.S., so it will come in handy a lot more than Russian or German. It will also make you much more of an asset to your future employer.

Unless your future employer deals in the markets of Germany or Russia. I would be learning Vietnamese, Hindi or Chinese with the emerging markets in South East Asia.

Congratulations! I'm an ME major at UIUC, finishing up my last semester here and getting ready to move on. Let me know if you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them. You'll love the weather here!

 

Again with the language thing, though, is that I take the languages I choose to take because I find them so interesting... it will be so easy for me to be successful studying them because I have so much interest- dragging myself through Spanish in college would just be a waste of my time.
Besides, I will probably learn Spanish after school in my spare time anyways . And French... (again!)

And sorry to disappoint, but I think my first really fast car (who knows how long down the road...) will be a 911 Turbo. I have always wanted a car that had such an amazing combination of speed, reliability, and usability. Then I will try to save and save and save for a 365 of some variation .
