The question you're asking requires a pretty lengthy answer and there's been a lot of discussion about this on F-Chat already. I'd encourage you to use the search feature (upper left) first and then to ask more specific questions about things you don't understand or can't find.

Bottom line... there's nothing wrong with 1999/2000 360s, but they did have important service campaigns which need to be addressed. Search on 360 service intervals, 360 campaigns, variators (<- in particular) and see what you find.

    Good luck,
    Frank

Your question is complicated. If you are truly serious, feel free to PM me and I would be happy to discuss on the phone. I just bought my third F-car and can give you the basics of how to think about it. There's just too much to write in a post. Many people helped me with my first purchase and I am willing to return the karma.

im just starting to look. im in the car business in ohio, i buy and sell highline cars such as bmw, benz, lexus, etc. i have waited a long time and saved alot of money (for me) to get one of these cars. ferraris are my passion. but im not as in tune with these as i am with the ones i sell. i just want to make sure that i dont hurry and jump into some nightmare of a car. i have pleanty of time and i want to do it right.

If you have to ask yourself if you can afford to do the service on the car then the time may not be right. In no regards am I bashing or speaking down. I just think maybe you should wait a little longer before you buy the car.

Nothing wrong with that, but as posted above, people will offer to help. But if you know your not buying for 2-3 years as you state in your other thread, I think its only fair you be honest with those from whom you seek help.

Seems to me you are not actively searching, (based on your thread from 2 days ago) but gathering info so you can make a informed decision in 2-3 years. Sensible approach if you ask me...

Good luck to you. Hope you reach your dreams. (But I still vote for the Girl... ;) )

sorry, i didnt mean to mislead anyone. i really could pull the trigger at any time now, but looking at the market and whats happening in the economy it looks like 360s will be even cheaper within the next 2-3 years. if i ran across a steal, which is possible in my business, i just want to know what im looking at. thats why im here. it seams this is the place to get the answers that im looking for.

Ok I read your other post and thread too.

Look, sometimes things change and your 2 year plan becomes your 2 month plan. In my case I had intended to by the new M3....and was saving the Ferrari for my "next car" I got on the list for a vert m3, piad $1000 deposit more than 1 year ago and then asked myself..."What happens to a dream defered?" Fearing that it would dry up like a "rasin in the sun". I got my deposit back and bought me a Ferrari!. Here is what I did to scope out if I was Ferrari ready and for me I had to answer yes to all of these:

-Can I afford yearly scheduled maintanence at a Ferrari Dealer at $5000 per year?
-Can I afford a catastrophic failure of $10000 or more per year?
-Can I come up with $150,000 or so to afford a nice example from a Ferrari dealer?
-Can I afford occasional $5000 unforeseen monthy car related expenses?
-Can I afford $40 to get it hanwashed once a week?
-Can I afford $20 to have the valet keep it up front and let me take the keys anytime I drive it anywhere
-Can I afford to have the car detailed 3 times a year for $400
-Can I purchase this car and do all of the above without impacting our life style financially in anyway (Travel, food and wine, shopping, retirement savings, real estate investments, etc)

None of these are hard numbers but if I could not answer yes to all of them then I would not have even considered a Ferrari. They are beautiful, wonderful to drive but they can be very very expensive.

Like others here have said, if you have specific question PM me your number/email and we can talk. Dude we all want this for you but we just don't want you to do this badly.

    Best

    Jason,

I think that is a great way to think about it. If you take that point of view, there is no chance of being surprised. That said, I think those numbers are really conservative - meaning they represent a worst case senario. Obviously, things vary based on personal taste - such as the $150K purchase number, but overall I like your thinking.

Thanks. I spend a fair amoung of time focusing on total cost of ownership as I trade in and out of cars with some frequency. If bought right on the front end, the F-car can actually be a pretty reasonable experience. I have done better on F-cars then I have on P-cars, for sure.

Jason / Tim you guys are 100% correct IMO. I like Jason's numbers, because they are relatively worst case, but any of them are realistic possibilities (although purchase price may be a bit high for a good 360 coupe).

You definitely don't want a ferrari on a tight budget.

all good stuff. makes sense. i will definetely use that as a guide, except id like to find a 360 coupe for well under $100k. I missed one at the end of last year at Manhiem Auto Auction where a 99 modena went over the block at $68k it was a lease company that had the car and those lease companies just sell them no matter what kind of money they get. the others that i have seen in that identicle car are bringing low to high $70k range. i visit this auction frequently, they have a hell of an exotic sale every two weeks.
