I understand that Baseball is our “national pastime” but why is this steroid issue being overseen by the Congress. Doesn’t Congress have better things to do? I mean really can anyone give one GOOD reason this is something taking up so much time?

The Michael Vick dog case was in and out, never had to go before congress and explain himself, it was a crime he went to court, went to jail… the justice system is relatively simple, why is the steroid issue in the legislative branch and not the judicial branch to begin with?

    Just asking...

    GOD, I CAN'T AGREE MORE!!!!!!

We have a "looming recession", unease in Iraq, ongoing elections, a credit crisis combined with (or stemming from) a housing recession, etc etc etc and congress wants to focus on Roger Clemmons and Barry Bonds! Talk about sticking your nose where it doesn't need to be at the wrong time! Certainly there are better and more productive things Congress can be reviewing like SOCIAL SECURITY or HEALTHCARE, or maybe The war in Iraq ... perhaps they are bored with the usual issues!

Focus? This is only a few hours out of their entire year! It just happens to be high profile.

Personally, I find it rather entertaining to see this holier than thou yutz squirm! He has skated with a fake smile and/or an occasional autograph his whole life but not this time! :)

I know its high profile and that’s way its getting so much publicity, but why is legislative branch overseeing it and not the judicial branch.

They say these people lied under oath, that’s a crime and should be heard by, oh I don’t know, the branch that deals with the enforcement of the law not the ones that “make” the laws.

High profile like a certain slick Willie. "....I did not have sexual relations with..." you know the rest. ...

Also, I couldn't agree more about how many tax dollars and public time is being wasted on this when there are more important issues to be working on. I like the congressman who said "...its to protect our children.." Yeah, everything the government does is to protect our children. Thats why kids smoke, do drugs, drink, rob, shoot, murder, skip school, get a disorder then get on social program. I don't feel trying to expose baseball players using steroids is going to "protect our children". Make it legal, tax the crap out of it, just like cigarettes and booze. I think more people die everyday smoking and drinking than using steroids. Just because little "billy" highschool star o.d.'s on some performance enhacing substance, thats his problem for being stupid. Its time to let us be responsible for ourselves! And baseball players using steroids, come on, that is the most low effort sport, I can just imagine congress looking into football and basketball next.

I think this ".... high profile." view is right, darth. It is an election year for the most powerful office in the land and others. They (Congress) are showing the American public they care about America, Baseball, Hotdogs & ..... . That is because they freaking don't care for the rest of their terms. They need to be seen on TV doing SOMETHING.

But there may be some good fall-out. Maybe, just maybe, this will serve as a warning shot to Baseball and the other pro sports to police themselves and clean-up their act on their own, or ........... Hell, I don't know ....... like ...... maybe ..... uh ... no dessert?

We'll just have to wait and see.

doesnt the MLB and or team owners have massive tax breaks given to them by an act of congress in the 30's/depression to keep the game alive? and because of that congress is now involved in the steroids issue?

This question just came up in my business law class and the teacher was saying that Congress has the power to oversee interstate commerce (power given by the constitution). Since baseball is "Americas Pastime" there is a large amount of interstate money that is being delt with so Congress has the power oversee these litigations. Still, it is frustrating to see so much money being spent on this issue when there are countless others going unattended.

The way i see it the reason congress got envolved is because they see this as a problem they are capable of solving. Congress is incapable of solving any real problems so they cherry pick issures where they might have some success. This is accually a good thing. The only thing congress is good for is screwing things up worse so taking on meaningless issues keeps then occupied.

The Dems were all over Clemens. the Reps were all over McNamee. the Dems called the hearing as they are in the majority. Clemens is and has been friendly with George W Bush. the message is: if you are friends with GWB your life is not going to be much fun if we have anything to say about it.

Congress can't do anything about steroid use. they can't stop the use of coke and marijuana. Just a political sideshow at taxpayer expense. Sad.

Perhaps the DEA wants a bigger budget for the war on drugs  .... This could be the perfect way for them to justify it to the naive tax paying citizens.

DEA sales pitch "Look we need more money to combat the new steroid epidemic!! Yeah!! A bigger budget for the DEA is gonna do a lot to diminish steroid use!!"

More of the same stupidity by our elected officials.
