So I just finished doing a study abroad program in Europe. I must say that the best beer that I had over there was Franziskanser Hefe-Weissbeir. If you are unaware of this beer I'm pretty sure you have no idea what you are missing out on. Upon getting back into the states I found that the large Safeway and BevMo are the ones to go to for this beer. I have introduced it to many of my friends and they couldn't agree more. So to all of you with access to Franziskaner, step out of the box of your regular beer and be introduced into the world of amazingly the flavorful and delicious Franziskaner beer!

As soon as I saw the title my first reaction was Franziskaner. It is really a great beer.

No question: Schlappeseppel. Has also won countless awards, among them the silver medal of the world brewer's association. Franziskaner is nice, but it's so... 'industrial'. Like if you prefer bread from the supermarket instead of the one from your local bakery.

I love Hoegaarden but it must be realy cold. I recommend to put empty glass into freezer and than to serve the cold Hoegaarden from this frozen glass - amazing. Thats how they serve this beer in one pub here and i started to do it at home as well.....

Did anyone try Czech beer? Try Pilsner Urquell and tell me your opinion......

Yes, Bernard is quite popular beer here as well. I like their alcohol free version also. But Pilsener beer is best :)

Regarding Germany, i travel to Germany often and their beers are excellent as well, but do not have any special brand.

Although I've drank many different beers in Germany, and enjoyed them all without exception, if I was to choose just one it would have to be Bitburger.

About as good as the best, IMHO.

And as long as we are mentioning some of the proletariat brands, does anyone recall old Dortmunder Union?

I have not been able to find it here in Dallas for many years now.

I'm going to have to try that. Can't forget the lemon.

Urquell is quite good. I enjoy it.

I met this girl a few weeks ago (bf unfortunately) who enjoys a good Oatmeal Stout I was in shock. As well as trying new beers. Never met a girl who was such a conisieur of beer. I don't think there is any other way or better way to impress me.

Franz is good, although I'm more a Warsteiner/Bitburger person. Anyone comment on EKU? I had it in College, but I've never seen it since.....

I like Stuttgart's Schwaben Brau Das Echte for a rich, old fashioned beer. Also prefer the Czech Budvar (known as Budweiser there) over the Pilsner Urquelle.

Yes Budwar is also very good, actually very similar to Pilsner. I live in Pilsen which is city where is produced Pilsner Urguel so i can not prefer different one :) You can visit the brewery, go to basements (there is about 10 km basements) and taste the beer directly from barrels before its pasteurized - very good. But i like to taste all possible beers and have some other favourites as the Hoegaarden.

Budwar is last brewery still owned by Czech state. They are going to sell it propably within next 2 years, if anyone would be interested, here is your chance :)

Regarding the Budwar/Budweiser name, there is for many years big fight between American Budweiser and CZ Budvar about the brand Budweiser. Thats actually main reason why is still the CZ brewery in state hands and its not private. They are waiting till all courts in all world countries will be finished to increase company value. Its about end soon. CZ guys won most of the courts in most of countries (some of them lost). So drinking Budweiser you should drink the Czech beer, but you can still find of course the American Budweiser. Point is that these 2 beers are absolutely different in terms of taste and also in terms of production...... I do not say the American is bad, just different.

Try it. Let the glass to be frozen till is white. The beer should be also cold. Best pleasure is to use original glass as below :) And amazing is 0,5 lt glass, not sure if you seen this glass but its unbelievably big. Looks like its 2 liters due to very massive glass material used. If you sit in pub with some friends drinking from this 0,5 lt glass - its funny :) There is small 0,3 glass on the picture. 0,5 looks same but is realy VERY big.....

There is already little taste of orange in the beer.

for my taste..... the BEST ! Not really cheap, even in Germany at around $ 10,--/six pack.
But only for people who like the typical Pilsner with that slightly bitter flavor . Czech Budvar is kind of milder.
My favourite german beer - also a Pilsner variant - is Warsteiner.
And I dislike all Bavarian variants.

    Best Regards from Germany

    Martin
