I just purchased a set of Hyperflows and am debating on installing them myself as it appears many of you have. Do you have any advice, tips, or DIY info you can pass on? I am very handy, work on my other cars a bit but have left the Fcar stuff to a mechanic. For instance: pulling the bumper, just jack the rear end up or jack stands all around? Any help/tips are appreciated, -Billy
Jack up rear of car...............remove exhaust and hook in. Make sure the engine is DEAD COLD, then soak all the nuts on the exhaust/cats with WD40 for as long as possible. Hopefully they will not be too tight remove. It is an easy job mate. Have a go if you think you are handy. Its only an exhaust, remember.
2 more tips: 1) I pull of the rear wheels as it makes access from the side a lot easier 2) hope you have fingers like "ET" On a scale fr 1 to 10, 10 being the hardest. Tech level: 3 as you are just spinning nuts. Knuckle Buster: 5 as it is kinda tight. Frustration Level: Average off 5 depending on how things go. Also, pre soak all of the bolts the night before. Also the clamps are a piece of a sh.. and I swear are made of old Japanese pot metal. The crack pretty easily. Now get out there and get er done so you can terrorize all your neighbors with with F-1 sounds
I picked up a set of used Hyperflows also--just trying to find time to install them..If I told you guys the price--you would shoot me... Do any other exhaust componenets need to be loosened or removed?? Or just remove cat and install cat?
Thanks for the tips guys. A couple more ?'s & comments: --> How do you get the bumper off? (Is it necessary at all or just go from the top and through the wheel wells?) --> Two jacks or just one to lift the rear end. (There was a post a while back stating to use two, one on each side of the Tranny at jacking points. --> Most agree that I buy replacement Exhaust Clamps by Hill Engineering now. (I assume D at R has them) --> I think the exhaust just has to be loosened and not removed --> This will have me with Tubi Headers, (only a year old), Tubi Exhaust, & HF Cats...I can't wait! -Billy
No bumper removal necessary. All you have to do is remove the top heat shield and air boxes. Then undo the bolts that hold the cats in place bewtween manifold and exhaust. You may have some difficulty with the bolts but some WD40 will cure that. Next slide out the old cats and replace with new Hyperflows that will slot in easily. I did not have to remove tyres, bumper or exhaust. It was pretty easy for me.
It was easy! The only trouble was that i had to chip off a rusted exhaust donut. Combined with the hyperflow, it turned my mild mannered mondial into what a ferrari should sound like!
So pretty easy to get them from the top?? Looking at mine--I don't see if they go in one way or the other--Is there a front and back to the cat--Does it flow both ways? Both sides are interchangable also?
Thanks for the continued tips George. Robbie...there is definitely a left and a right and a front and a rear. Look at the attached flange to the header and attached mounting bolts. -Billy
No but it gave me better accessability to muffler and other fasteners. I don't like to scrape my knuckles.
OK---Well while in the garage tonight I kept looking at the Hyperflows sitting on my shelf and couldn't resist... Got the stock cat off the passenger side and fitted the Hyperflow in place----will finish tomorrow...PS - Did all this from above never jacked up the car at all....
Wow from the top, nicework. I have never done it from the top as I always put them on a lift. Prepare to have some problemswith the clamps, we always replace them to insure no problems later on. We remove the diffusers from the bottom and then remove the old and install the new. 355's are much easier than the 360's. Good luck!
Wasn't easy, but I have no lift and figured if I could turn my hand into elastic man it would work. Hopefully the drivers side isn't any harder than the pass. side because the pass. side was a bit$% by myself working from above. I think I dropped that 13mm wrench 18 times....The only clamps that actually come off are the ones between the muffler and cat--I had both of those replaced back when I installed the secondary cat bypass pipe with Hill ones...My mechanic had a few extras laying around..
WD40 is useful for lots of things, but not for freeing rusty nuts and bolts. There are dozens of products that work much better as a rust penetrant.
I was going to, but it is difficult stopping to take pics every time I remove or loosen a bolt or nut. Then with my dirty hands, didn't want to go messing with the camera...
A bit late with my reply to your question on the Hyperflows. If it helps I dropped the wrenck 36 times!!!!! But as you can see it can be done from the top without jacking car up. I have the Hill ones to and that certainly makes it easier. I think you have the X-OST on so would be interested to find out what it will sound like. MY X-OST is oln its way. I have mille miglia on with the Hyperflows at the moment and the sound is really great but interested to see what they sound like with X-OST. When you start the car up make sure you check for air leaks where the cat bolts onto the manifold. Don't worry about slight leak from cat to muffler. Good to see you getting them on
