They don't go 400kts at 41k. They go 360 kts at 41k, and 400 kts at 30 - 32k, depending on the temp.

Piaggio has a background of innovation in vehicles , BTW is claimed to have developed the first modern helycopter. To be anedoctical on this aspect, insiders said that the nice Vespa roller has been developed by its brilliant Chief Engineer ( Mr. D`Ascanio ) just to recycle a huge surplus stock of small wheels ,left over from the production of the landing systems for aircrafts and helicopters.

    Not likely....

"Piaggio flew the first of two P.180 prototypes on September 23 1986, the second flew in May 1987. Italian certification was granted in March 1990, the first production Avanti flew that May and the first customer delivery took place in September 1990." That was two years after the old man passed on....

The Ferrari tie in came in more recent times, Piaggio was struggling for some time, and reorganized in 1998, at which time Piero Ferrari became President and that's when the close association with Piaggio and Ferrari came about.

I spoke with one of Piaggio's marketing guys awhile back and he said that the plane is being touted as the 'Ferrari of the skies'. I asked him how much the 30K service would cost :)

I was in the aerospace business up until a couple of years ago and can verify that there were at least at that time some definite maintenance issues with the aircraft but hey, that's the case with most new airframe designs.

Francesco Baracca got the idea of the prancing horse from a Stuttgart crest.
