So tell me your thoughts, Sat evening the wife and I decided to take a trip into NYC for some dinner at the Gramercy Park Hotel. As stopped for the valet out front he gave me one of those "I will park it right here in front and keep an eye on it" Figuring it would cost $50 to park it in a garage and run the risk of some JA hitting it with his door, I parked it right in front threw the bell boy a fist full of 20's the keys and said thanks! The good part, 2 hours and $300 later with No booze (dont drink and drive the 360) I walk outside and there is the bell boy, puppy dog face on... and in his hand a $115.00 parking ticket from NY's finest... What do you do?? Then I will tell you what I did.

I would have kicked him in the berries and stomped his shin. :) Or maybe I'd have gone to management and demanded - civilly of course - they pay the ticket. If they refused I'd find a way to beat it - I always do (rec'd and successfully fought 12 parking tickets in my car and bike over the years).

So they gave your car a ticket for being parked in front of the hotel? Don't they keep VIP cars there all the time?

the bell boy should have warned you about that before you gave him the tip. i would have went back inside and nicely spoke to the hotel manager. i know they will tell you they are not responsible and some other B.S but since you ate dinner there i would think they would offer you some compensation. if all else fails you learned a good lessen. i would have went to the parking lot gave the parking attendant nice tip and ask if i could park it my self or leave it in a good spot. i do that with F430 that i have now. i have no problems with it. i also like in a parking lot because people tend to be nosey and take pictures around the car or a cab opens a door and dings the car that has append a few times.

I use to valet park cars at country clubs and restaurants for some extra cash back in high school. The valet should have asked his manager if you could park there regardless of even if he knew for sure that you could or couldn't. But I'll even admit that when someone is about to hand you a large amount of money, the only word able to come out of your mouth is "yes" without even thinking of what you're saying it to! .....wait I still do that today :D

Along with snatching the ticket from his trembling puppy paws, I'd get my keys and quite pointedly, my fistful of 20s back.

never got a tix in that type of situation.
in front of hotels its hotel loading zone, hotel can do whatever they want, cops don't ticket cars in that zone.
in your case, you can for the fist full of 20's back, but why would u give him more than 20 to begin with anyway?
and of course one more suggestion is not to eat/park at boutique hotels, the restaurant there suck anyway, the bars are ok.
gordon ramsey @ londonnyc, jean geroge @ trump, joel de robuchon @ four season, anything@ MO ... etc are much better choice for park and dine. cuz they actually have a long stretch of curbside loading zone not just 2 car lengths like those boutique hotels.

in the end, what i'd do: mock the dood for getting a tix, let him keep the 20's. pay the fine, and play the **** on.

Bingo. It's senseless to ruin the kids night. Let him keep the money, pay the ticket. Lesson learned.

I am with the pay the ticket crowd and learn your lesson. But WTF, $115 for a parking ticket! Is capitol punishment on the DA's table for double parking? I don't think I ever got a parking ticket for more than $40. But then I don't live in NYC either.

    Food for thought....
Go over the parking ticket rigorously. (Check the archives for the NYC parking ticket site rules & regs). If there's a mistake, you can easily get off with nothing more than a written note about the mistake.
I had it happen where a brownie was writing a ticket, told me she couldn't stop once she started, but made a purposeful blunder on the ticket so I could get it dismissed.
She did her civic duty, I got off with minimal fuss. That was a happy Ferrari.

I'm with ClydeM. Review the ticket and you either get a reduced fine or dismissed. I received 2 tickets recently off Central Park at the same time. One for no front plate (None of my cars have front plates) Yes I do live in NY. I just don't like it. The other was for an expired meter. I beat both tickets. For the first I stated that the meter was fast (Dismissed) for the second I noticed that they stated my car was Silver, its Black. I received the dismissal notices 2 weeks ago. Always Plead Not Guilty.

Parking tickets are the cities cash cow, most poeple just plead guilty and send the money. With just a little time and effort you can keep the money in your pocket.

yeah this sounds like a lack of communication on the bel boy's (hotel's) part...I too would have thought that the parking in front of the hotel was v.i.p. and controlled by the hotel, with that said, I would relay a message similiar to this to management, it's kind of a catch 22 beacuse you don't want to get the bel boy in trouble, but at the same time screw that!, if I'm comming to a well established hotel I would expect the employees would know what's legal and illegal around their hotel...OR you can pay the ticket.

I would have complained because once you give them the keys they accept to assume the responsibility of providing reasonable care for your vehicle. In my book the fine is their problem not yours; a good manager should know that and hopefully make good on the ticket. Having been a valet I would not blame him since as a valet you are all too often forced to do thing which you are not comfortable doing.

You're lucky the car didn't get towed. I had my car towed to the west side impound last saturday because I was parked - unbeknownst to me - in a commercial zone. The signs were horrible and I put $$ in the muni-meter. In addition to the $115 ticket I had to fork over $185 to bail the car out. Thankfully it wasn't the ferrari. What a scam though. After a little research I found out that in 1959 NYC passed a law that any illegally parked car anywhere in the city can be towed. Cha-ching! From what I saw last weekend, I'd say the city is making about $1M a week just off of those tickets and fees.

oh man that sucks. Imagine parking in an unmarked Taxi Stand at 12AM on a Friday night when you're going to a club, only to come out 5AM Saturday morning and find your car missing from the spot you parked it! We learned that lesson the hard way, had to take a cab to the impound lot, get $200 cash, wait 2 hours for them to decide they were ready to let us have the car back and then we got home at 8AM.

I wouldn't even think about it....if you are concerned about spending $200 to park your $175k car there is something seriously wrong. It's a lot cheaper than a $2500 paint touch-up from due to some apathetic parking garage guy. The lesson learned here is to park there again but expect the ticket next time....
