Hey PAP, good to have you back from the outback!

Having the headers off I was curious...are my valve guides really steel? All evidence says they should be being a '99 MY but one shop said they found 3 '99's with the older bronze guides. So I took a screwdriver and dremel too to an exposed valve guide (not as scary as it sounds)...and sure enough they're steel. I have a handful of brass / bronze guides from Dave Helms, and those clearly are nice and yellow. So what does this prove?? Nada, I was just curious :D

Driver side headers look fine...but still going with Fabspeed. We need 4+ for a group buy, I'll start another thread just for this.

I couldn't resist cleaning up the rear suspension a bit; sent the sway bar out for stripping / powder coating. I was able to find new sway bar bushing from these guys:

    http://www.energysuspension.com/pages/swaybbct.html

    QTY MANUFACTURER PART # DESCRIPTION
    --- ------------------- ---------- ------------------------
    1 ENERGY SUSPN (E12) 95105R 11/16 STAB BUSH SET

Best part is they cost $13.50 for the set! (plus shipping). The set comes with 2 red bushings, grease, and 2 brackets. I wanted to keep the stock brackets so I had those powder coated gold, somewhat close to the original chromate look. The old bushings were in bad shape - hard as a rock from the heat, discolored, and dry, the bar was getting rusty from the bushings scratching it. Now it's good as new!

The shock and spring unit on the 355 looks like a 'coil over' design, much like an after market item would with adjustable ride height. Looking at some pictures closely (Iv only seen the rear shock), the bottom section of the body is finely threaded and the lower spring seat platform has those notches cut into it to allow for one of those large C spanners to move the ring up or down on its threads, although usually on an aftermarket coilover there are two rings to lock against each other. Im guess what im asking is it is really a coilover, would be nice to have a car straight of the factory floor that the ride height could be slighty tweaked. After market coilovers used to exist for these cars didnt they? im assuming if you fitted such a set you would lose the stock fancy plug in actuator? system that is part of the standard cars good ride.

Great post....keep it coming and let us watch the progress. What's a major anyway?....$15k or so? How much do you think you'll save DIY?....and of course its + headers now.

Well for the hours I'll have into this...I'm losing a fortune! Good thing is I'm learning a ton (with a ton more to learn before I finish this up)...and tending to a bunch of small stuff that a major wouldn't cover.

Don't be inspired until I post that it's running. otherwise this may just be good advertising for doing a major at a dealer or ind. shop!

    I believe in you.

My old man used to tell me, "Try it yourself, it's the best way to learn... just make sure you have the money to call someone just in case you screw-up."

Kudos to you, i am sure that you and many others have learned exactly how much time it takes to do these jobs by these DIY efforts..

Most reputable garages include thorough cleaning and refinishing of a lot of extra things which do not get charged out fully. Certainly hard to list the numerous hardware items, nuts, bolts etc., all of which are replaced generally. But, we are "evil" guys?

Ha, if I include my labor this would be a $30k major! I'm going slow since this is all new to me, but yes it takes a ton of time - especially if you address all the peripheral stuff that isn't necessary, but is good to do while it's apart. Luckily we have a long winter season where it's off the road anyway. I truly enjoy doing this stuff myself, but I have to admit it would've been nice to just drop the car off and have it done by a pro like yourself, Dave Helms, Brian, etc.

    Cheers!

Injectors back from cleaning / calibration, cost $24 each from RC Engineering. After 40k miles they ranged from 233 - 246 cc/min, after cleaning they are 249-251 cc/min. Glad I had this done...I might go for this service every 20k miles or so on the 355. They also replace the O-rings to they're ready for install.

another is to make sure the TBs are sychronized.....

Is that an aftermarket 'sway bar' or just new??
