Yes PAP I know you guys in Austrailia also pay big bucks for these cars. The reason for the high prices here is that 2nd hand cars cannot be imported to this country and if new cars are imported the duties etc double the starting price. Because of Ferrari's limited production numbers and the allocation to this country there is normally a long waiting list and used cars can cost up to 30% more that a new one. Parts are expensive. But the owners are very passionate about their cars and the Ferrari owners club is stong and one of the oldest in the world, 40 years old last year!

Well the results is not good at all. The gearbox is totally trashed. All the ring nuts were loose, The bearings are in pieces. Some teeth are snapped off. All the teeth are pitted through the case hardenning with rust spots. I have photos, will put them on tonight. So the Ideal situation for me now is to find a reconditioned box or if that is not possible to buy all the parts to fix it.
If any of you guys can assist on where I can possible find a recon box I would really appreciate it.

Plus you and australia drive on the "correct" side of the road from what I recall from the 80s? So y'all need to convert to RHD to sell the US cars over there.....

    Ours are already done :)

    Okay now.

This is what?......... The 7th or 8th gearbox that we know of this happening because of loose ring nuts?

For the sake of your gearboxes, at your next engine out service INSIST that they pull the main & lay shaft covers and replace ALL the ring nuts with new ones (4 in total). That the ring nuts are properly torqued down, that Loctite 271 it used, and that the ring nuts are peened properly (good and HARD).

Daniel...maybe you can do a 348 gearbox exchange system. I or the stooges can rebuild them but it will cost lots of beers and pizza and parts discounts. Think about that. I think I have rebuilt more of these than anyone else so far.

Let's get a tally on mileage too....

All the boxes we've assisted with have been in the 45-60k mile range. Any other data points?

I would guess VIN#'s or build #'s to establish a pattern. Maybe certain years are at risk more than others.

You got my vote: My T is < 30k miles, but with all these 348 boxes going out, I'm wondering.

FBB would be a great, main repair station, however, Just getting out that box is expensive regardless...right? also, [I know, read the above thread top to bottom], but still thinking it's that nut, or burnouts, or ??

after several thousand examples, this might not be quite the epidemic

A bit of a progress report for you guys after the shell shock and a few stiff drinks.
Daniel has been a huge help in locating a recon box. You guys should when ever needed get your parts from him. About 8 months ago I ordered some parts from him and a week later they were delivered to my home here in Cape Town right at the bottom of Africa. Amazing. There is also a good used box available which is being looked at now before we decide which way to go.

Here is a couple of photos, first one - teeth pitted through the case hardening. Before I got the car it was in a deceased estate and I think it stood for a long time without turning a wheel. That is all I can think of here. It has been fully mantained to the highest standard from new.
Photo two - bits that came out. Look what is left of the bearing shell (on end)!!
The amazing thing is it worked perfectly. The only warning I had was a soft whine and feedback through the gearlever in 5th gear and I then drove slowly home.

    My milage is 66000km / 41250 mile.

This is most likely irrelevant, but I can't help but ask: Of those who have had issues, is there any correlation to frequency of fluid service and or the type of fluid used? Were you running Ferrari spec lubricants or one of the often recommended Redline ones?

    Good to know.

The next question is who will be first to create the "how to check your transmission while you have your engine out" pictorial thread. :)

Hope you get it on the road soon.

Kevin, any indication yet as to what this is going to cost you?
BTW, i'm devistated about this for you :(

As far as I can tell, everyone who's chimed in having had this happen... all were 1990 models?

actually, I posted this question elsewhere to hear a different set of responses regarding the panic on 348 boxes. One of the items I stated was lack of yearly maintenance [as well as burnouts etc.] which sounded to me more the problem. When you said 'pitting', I was about sure the fluids were not change normally.

SO: BTW, might want to check out seals gas-pump for deterioration on rubber items, not to mention shocks etc. etc. etc. OH, ya' the fuse box....hope all is in order.

thanks, great pics, good to hear Ricambi again to the rescue.
