position of woodruff key on 328 at TDC

    Can someone ascertain something simple for me?

    In a 328 (probably same for QV), if the engine / flywheel is at 1-4 TDC, and you remove the front damper pulley, is the woodruff key slot straight up at 12 oclock?

    The key-way is in line with the #1 rod journal at TDC. With the engine at TDC the key is going to be 45deg. to the left of 12:00 when you are standing in front of the engine, something like 10:30.

    The 328 SPC illustration confirms what James posted (and it makes sense for making/designing the crankshaft -- not putting the key slots in the plane of the throws would just add more confusion):
