HELP! "No Proof of Insurance" Ticket --> $928.00

    I was hoping that maybe somebody here would know a little bit about Arizona laws. I was pulled over for speeding, nothing totally extreme, 80 mph in a 65 zone. Fair enough anyways, but I wasn't driving my car. I was thinking of buying a car and so the owner (a friend) lent it to me for the weekend. He told me the car was insured and I figured the registration and insurance would be in the glove box. I got pulled over and found the registration, but no insurance in the car. Turns out my friend had it in his wallet.

    I am from Montreal, Canada. I don't know what the law is, but as long as the car is insured, am I ok? Or must it be insured in MY name? I was "test driving" really. I told this to the officer. He said I could just fax in proof of insurance, but there is no fax number on the documents. Do I just the pay the speeding ticket and with it send along a copy of the proof of insurance? Then i'm off the hook? I am back in Canada now, so everything needs to be done from here.

    Any help is appreciated!

    Here's the deal: you have to provide the state with proof that the vehicle was insured at the time that you received the ticket. The insurance does not have to be in your name specifically, but must cover that specific vehicle in the specific time of the citation.

    What city court did they refer you to? If you can provide that, we can find the court's phone number; call them, explain the situation. You will pay the fine and fax in proof of insurance for the car. They will drop the insurance charge.

    The dumb thing about this scenario is, the cop can easily verify if the car was insured through thier tie-in to the DMV computer system.
    Regardless, the ticket will be dismissed if the valid insurance certificate is presented to the authority, your "friend" should take care of that for you!
    The car is not required to be insured in your name. As long as you are a licensed driver that carries insurance on any vehicle, and the vehicle itself is/was insured at the time, you'll get the dismissal. If you were cited for the speeding violation, you'll have to pay that part of the fine.

    If the fax number is how you plan to handle it, just go to the website of the jurisdiction where you received the ticket, i'm sure you'll find a fax number there. Or just call them and ask what the proper fax number is for your situation.

    Wow, feeling much better! Thanks for the input.

    The court is the Flagstaff Justice Court. Coconino County Courthouse. Not sure where that is, but i was on my way to the Grand Canyon.
    Will it be fine if i get a photocopy of the insurance document? I ended up buying the car off him, so I have the insurance paper. I can send it in with my payment (is it best to mail a check? I suppose they will only take US dollars?). The car WAS insured at the time of the citation.

    WHy in the heck would you pay a ticket in arizona when you live in canada? Screw 'em. How often are you ever going to drive in that state again?

    Since you are less than 20 over the speed limit you could go to traffic school instead of paying the ticket...makes sense if it works with your schedule and is cheaper than the ticket I would go for it.

    Arizona cops... I'm surprised you weren't hog tied while guns were drawn.

    Which county was this? I know a lawyer - don't ask how.

    Not sure about the specifics of the insurance document. I'm sure that a fax/photocopy would be fine. Here is the information that I could find for the Flagstaff Justice Court - call them and I'm sure that they could help you from there. Don't be surprised if you encounter some stupid people. :)

    LOL I know EXACTLY where this was. It's the same town that my friend got ticketed at in the late 90's & I got ticketed in 2003. Guess those *******s are still at it. Ahhhhh, the memories. I think the town survives solely off revenue from "speeders".

    You should also verify with your friend that their policy does not have any driver exclusions. Many collector car, (as well as standard) policies do, and if the owner elects to have exclusions, (they can exclude everyone but themselves if they like, but most often its just for kids as such) then if the court decides to pursue it, you will lose.

    This is a very simple fix.

    Get a copy of your friends insurance card.

    Get a copy of your insurance card.

    Insurance portion of the ticket... DONE! TAKEN CARE OF!!! NOTHING ELSE TO WORRY ABOUT...

    Now the speeding ticket... thats another story... there are lots of ways to skin a cat

    I have looked over the ticket a million times. It's way over due. I didn't pay because I figured the same thing, "when will I be in Arizona again?" ... turns out the answer is May 15 - Aug 28. lol. So I gotta pay. I noticed he got my birthday wrong on the ticket? Worth anything? I don't mind paying the speeding, as long as i get off on the insurance part. It was insured with Geico. No special insurance, I think I'm covered. Unless someone here thinks that somehow I can get out of the speeding ticket too? This is my first ticket. Canada or US. I'm a young driver. Any more advice is appreciated. I plan on sending down the money and insurance proof by next week.

    In some cases a bench warrant will be issued. Without settling the matter or appearing before the judge, if you get stopped again, a lot of fast talking and possible escort to the local poky may be in order.

    Exactly, and it could happen in any state if you come back to the US and get pulled over again, or even at US Customs at the airport. You're best bet is to take care of it.

    I paid the speeding ticket ($163.00 + $30.00 late fee) by money order. I photocopied the insurance document showing that the car was insured under my friends name (the owner of the car) at the time of the ticket. I sent both down to the court that issued the ticket. Sent it registered so that someone had to sign for it. So there is proof I mailed it. It has been a couple of weeks now. I have not heard anything from them. Should I expect to? Or should I assume all is well?

    Give them a call and ask for the status and for them to fax you a reciept for the payment

    On Monday my girl got caught speeding(also on the way to Grand Canyon)@1hr away in a town called Williams. She got nailed for going 87 in 75 mph.We are from the Chicagoland area(where they usually keep your I.D.)-The officer states that in Arizona anything over 85mph can result in automatic jail time(you should have seen the look on her face!!!!)-Thanks for the above posted info.(I told her to just pay the $100.00+ dollar fine w money order etc.) send in the neon green envelope and be done with it-the officer was very polite(I was surprised!!)

    I know this is late to the thread, but thought the info may help other people on here...

    Arizona has a website for public access to court info: I did a quick search, and there's one for your name that was filed 08/10/07 with Flagstaff Justice Court, except the "Party Address" is Tucson -- if that's when it happened and your DOB is Aug 27th '87, looks like you're clear as of 05/01/08... check it out for yourself:

    Some traffic scholls can be taken on the web and you can do that from anywhere, even Canada - sorry you had to go through the late motions and missed that
