Modern Sci- Fi .... I'd have to go with-

    1) I stayed away when they first came out..... thinking it would be another Arnold Schwarzenegger stinker (Comando, Running Man) but really like Arnold and Carl Weathers jungle adventure PREDATOR

    2) And again was pleasantly surprised by Danny Glover's job in PREDATOR 2

    3) Matrix was another cool low-expectation movie that blew me away!

Am I the only one who liked Dark Star? It's slow, but really worth watching some late night.

I'll also have to throw in the Back to the Future trilogy, technically it could be considered Science Fiction.

Serenity was a recent favorite of mine, but you really had to be a Firefly fan first to get everything from it.

I hadn't seen this King Kong since I was very young, one night it was on cable so I watched it. It is extremely good, I liked it better than the recent CG-heavy version. Lange was perfect for that part, and the natives were creepy without being totally over the top in the new one.

As far as the best ever, my first thought was also Aliens, although as a group the Star Wars films are tough to beat.

I don't think anyone has mentioned TOTAL RECALL, but for pure science fiction it is awesome. To this day no one knows if it was a dream or not.

And finally may I nominate the original STARSHIP TROOPERS. It had heroes you could cheer for, action, comedy, and unisex showers ;)

It took me a while..... but I now want to change my vote for Best Sci-Fi ever

And best use of creepy music since Jaws.... the music that played at the end while fire burned out, was soooo spooky, dark, cold,... and just too tired to fight anymore... what a great ending!

sample of music here at fan web site intro ( can you guess the movie, by the music? hint- its not called outpost31) http://www.outpost31.com/

The new Battlestar Galactica series. Not technically a movie, but still the best SF.

Has anyone seen EVENT HORIZON? I found it to have very creepy moments when I saw it in the theater, but it definitely lost something when I later rented it and watched at home. Not the best ever by any means though.

For sure Star Wars (as it set the bar and spawned an entire generation of films), Serenity was a damn fine movie (even if you didn't watch Firefly), and for sure Predator, Alien (and of course Aliens), Terminator 1 and 2 and last but not least Stark Trek 2 Wrath of Kahn. As honorable mention, there is Independence Day, Back to the Future, Stargate (which birthed two excellent tv shows), The 5th Element, and of course Ice Pirates (just kidding).

Empire Strikes Back gets my vote.

I did. It was pretty dark, but a little too Hollywood for me.

Alien has to be one of the most terrifying movies of all time. They did a great job of conveying a sense of isolation. I still remember the scene where they were recklessly throwing tubes onto a metal cart in the dark storage room with condensation dripping from the chains hanging from the ceiling.

A couple other nominations I haven't heard mentioned yet:
    -The Cell
    -2010
-The Man Whole Fell to Earth
    -Fire in the Sky

I would say "Alien", the first of the series. I had to work on my parents a long time to let me go see that...

    Top 10 for me:

    1.Alien

    2.Aliens

    3.Predator

4.The Day the Earth Stood Still - Came out right after all the Roswell incident and Roswell is still a debate today

    5.Bladerunner

    6.Soylent Green

    7.Signs

    8.Predator II

    9.Time Machine (original)

10 Planet of the Apes (original)

I'll like to see them do a remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" without butchering it.

By far one of the worst remakes of all time. Predator is one my favorite movies of all time, P2 is one of my least favorite.

I like Predator better than the remake too, Predator II is ok, I just like the creature. I think the jungle setting in the first was better done than the urban setting in II.
The Predator is one the best Sci Fi creatures ever done.

Contact. Carl Sagan's great picture. The idea was taken from a short story called Message from Andromeda (sp?) written by Fred Hoyle, but done very, very well. The interesting part is that all of the scifi is possible under current theory (in another 10k years when we figure out how to do it). Amazing.

Robinson Crusoe on Mars. An old one, but always worth watching. "Hey Mona, more salt on that cracker???"
