What do you see as the current spread between the two models, assuming 5 years/15,000 miles differential and (since they are far more plentiful) automatic/F1 transmissions? e.g., 2000 456MGTA/2005 612, 2001 456MGTA/2006 612, etc.? I'm guessing around $100K. Do you see the differential dropping over the next few years?

Just had Sheehan send me a TdF blue 2003 456m with 6k in perfect shape for $129k. Just looked at a TdF blue 2005 612 with 6k for $169k. Apples to Apples. IMO, the 456 looks better but the 612 is more techno-modern. The 612 should be LESS reliable given all the electronics. In the next 5 years, people may not want to deal with aging electronics as we see with older AMG Mercedes, etc. The 456 seems to have flattened out while the 612 is not a strong reseller because of the controversial design and continues to fall. Nowhere near a $100k differential for actual selling prices between the two (most dealers are asking MUCH more than they will be able to actually sell a 612 for). The 456 is a 2+2 that actually has a design I've never heard of as ugly. I have heard the 400/412, 250 gt2+2,365gt2+2 and the 612 described as "ugly" on these boards among other places.

I don't think that's an apples-to-apples comparison. Sheehan's 456 is probably one of the most expensive 456s on the market (asking price, anyway) and isn't actually going to get anywhere near that price-- although I hope he does!

The 612 you mentioned is one of the cheapest 612s I've heard of.

A more relevant comparison would be a $60k 456 vs. the $169k 612. That said, I believe the spread will narrow as time goes on.

I think Sheehan prices his cars fairly. I'm pretty sure a similar 456m recently sold for over $120k at B-J auction recently as well so he's within 10% of the true market value. The $169k 612 was sold (perhaps for less I'm convinced) and I didn't buy it because I bought a different car. If you are a serious cash buyer for a 2005 612, I don't think it's hard at all to find them in this price range. Regardless, the spread between the 456 and 612 is obvious narrowing as 612s continue to depreciate faster than 456s, I don't think you'll get much argument there. Patience is a virtue when buying late-model used Ferraris.
