Okay, since you have already proven to be somewhat good at handling the torch, why don't you purchase 4 of those, rip their engines out and weld those together? That would make a nice 5.4 liter V16, capable of spinning your 11,000 rpm and making your over 800 hp before tuning. Port and polish, and you're approaching 1000 hp. Can you spell Veyron??? :D:D:D And the Veyron's got quad turbo chargers. Hayabusas do 350 hp with a turbocharger. Times 4 makes 1400 hp. Bugatti, eat your heart out! :D

    :)

yeah, but then I'd have to put that 1400hp engine in a 1200lb suzuki car :D

Or just stick the the V12 308 conversion :)

I got the pricing back on the Ti plate (just in case I wanted to make rods) and it's about $1200 for a 12"x12"x1" piece of plate (1" think is the closest they have to the .825" rod thickness) that might be big enough. So material would be in the 1200-1500 range. Making rods sure seems like a lot of bother I don't have time to deal with.......

It looks like I need one more night or so on the first side of the block to finish cleaning out the water jacket area. It's kind of a pain because it's a larger diameter than the flange the cylinder liner sits on so I can't just run in with a boring head and I set up the machine with the head on a 30* angle so to go in and circle mill (like a cnc) means moving all 3 axises. What I'm doing is "circle" milling around the top with a 3/8x 3.5" cutter that will give me room to spin the boring tool to finish the rest of the hole and the big diameter of the cutter means that ifI only move to 8 points (every 45*) I still get a decent looking circle. It's a pain, but it's going.

You are unbelieveable. How you ever find time to sleep amazes me, let alone take on the 308 V12 conversion project.

You seem to write the equivalent to novel every night in posts. Very detailed as well and enjoyabe to read.

Perhaps if you redueced it by just a little we would see the completion of this project.

I work when little Victor is napping and post when I'm (supposed) to be watching him (don't tell Lana:) ).

Posting the project helps me in 2 ways. The first an obvious is that it gives the people reading a chance to give input, suggestions, sources that have been very helpful. I'm just glad I've been able to keep it interesting enough for people to bother trying to read any of it with all my misused, misspell, misplaced and otherwise unintelligible writing/rambling, a writer I'm not.

The second and less obvious thing is that posting helps quite a bit in the planning and record keeping. There is a lot going on here with most of it in my head so posting it makes me take a few minutes to thing about what I’m doing, what the repercussions might be, and what comes next. Then once I’ve written it down I can always refer back to it later because I’m terrible at keeping useful records in the shop. There are no real drawings for anything, most stuff is only in my head and the rest is vague sketches or just a number written on the project pad I keep. I am capable of achieving almost inconceivable levels of disorganization…..

Victor is obviously a new addition to the family. I'm on at this time everynight because its my shift to look after our new bloke. :)

Have and will continue to enjoy reading the progress of your project.

Why can't you go in with the boring head retracted and then expand it out when it gets past the smaller ID? How much larger is the ID of the water jacket area than the part the sleeves rest on? Are you going to heat treat the block at some point?

    I could do that with a boring/facing head whcih I don't have and cost $1500 :(

The problem is it needs to cut it's way out to the diameter so it needs to be a facing head, not a boring head. What I'm doing with the 3.5" cutter is making clearance so I can drop the boring bar past the flange and hace a place to openit back up to size to cut the rest of the bore to size. I'm going out about 2mm per side.

I'm not going to re-heat treat the block. If I was going to I would have need to do that before I started machining.

I'm still thinking about Ti rods.......anybody in for a group build? The same rod fits TR/400/308/328/348 I think.

Side 1 is done......and it only took twice as long as planned. You can hardly tell I welded the snot out of it now :)

The last picture is a 348 liner dropped in to kind of get an idea, the actual liner will have slightly different dimensions to work better with this block and to allow it to accept the larger 86.5mm bore (348 is 85mm)....but it's close enough to give you the idea.

    On to side 2.

    hey

All of a sudden that pool of molten aluminum is starting to look like an engine!!!

    Way cool!

    Good luck with side two...

that's what I was thinking too....it's starting to look like an engine block again.

I've ben thinking that for a while now....what I'm really waiting for is to start messing with the valves in the 4 valve per cylinder heads I just had to have on the 12 cylinder engine......

Mark, I was really curious about how close you would be to tolerances once you started installing the sleeves? With all of that cutting and welding you have to be on your toes to keep everything straight. Just by eyeballing it looks great but what does the meter say? So....are you still within budget on this project? This thing is so rad, I think you should turn the exhaust "UP" and put short chromed stacks through the rear deck! (grin) J

Ah, just think about it. You COULD have taken three heads of a 355, cut one in half and weld everything together to get two 6 cylinder heads, with FIVE valves per head :D

    Thanks!

.......and it's always better to get luckly than have to work for it :)

I got the block turned around and indicated in on side 2 so I'm ready to start cutting I think, hopefully my luck holds.

Fitting the sleeves to proper tolerances is no problem for 2 reasons. First I'm used oversize sleeves to get the bore up so metal needs to come out of the block which lets me get the hole round and in the correct location. Second the sleeves will be custom made so I can fit them to whatever size the block cleans up at where needed. The bore on the first side are true to the crank within .001" it looks like which is more than plenty good.

One thing that works in my favor is that all the parts that bolt to the block are custom in so way and need to be fit to the block. That means that when I need to cut .020" off the block to clean up a face it really doesn't mater becasue I'm making the mating part to fit anyway. If I har to make stock parts bolty on I would have had to weld up the face so I could cut it back to OEM spec meaning lot more work for me.

I'm not doing too bad on the budget so far. I should be able to complete the build and swap with the money I got parting out all the V8 and superchager stuff....it's going to be close though so I can't aford any more surprises.

As cool as exhaust out the deck lid looks with a longitudinal engine, I don't think it would look right with a transverse engine. Plus I really want that "sleeper" look where it looks pretty stock from the outside so I'd like to keep the deck lid completely stock if I can.
