That is only about 10 minutes away from where I live. US 30 Drag strip in Merrillville Indiana, Now Hobart by annex. Back when I was a kid all the big names came out to race. I remember seeing Don the Snake there. Back then, there was no population around and I lived at least 15-20 miles away and at night, you could here the cars like they were in your back yard. The good old days.........
Don't tell me that those guys were holding onto the back of the cars. Please don't tell me that. Dale
Yep, they would hold onto the cars rollbars or pushbars to keep them from rolling over the start line early. I have seen a few get yanked down when they held on too long. Can you imagine trying to hold back one of todays top fuel cars...........Ane the nitro fumes that would be forced into your lungs. Now those were the good old days......:>) Image Unavailable, Please Login
It could be Mooneyes, but probably not. I do not think that Mooneyes ever ran a hemi. It was Chevy powered all the time if my memory serves me right. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Beautiful machines in action, thanks for posting them. A friend of mine is active in a local traditional-only hot rod and chopper club. They are pooling their considerable resources (i.e., collections of vintage stuff) to build a period-correct early '60s rail dragster. After seeing some of their work, I think it's going to be a screamer.
Great pictures. I live about 15 minutes from there. Also brings back memories of those old radio commericals. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Sunday, Sunday at US 30 Dragway....Come see the asphalt pounding 1000 horsepower top fuel dragsters roar down the strip at speeds approaching 225 mph in 7 seconds. See the smoke, smell the nitro, feel the ground shake beneath your feet.......Be there..........Sunday at US 30 Dragway..Be there!!!!! Something like that I think.......
They must have all used the same advertising company. Out east, Atco Dragway in NJ used the same pitch. "Sunday, Sunday, Sunday at Atco Dragway, New Jersey..."
They probably did. I remember hearing the same thing out of Oklahoma City and in the Dallas/Fort Worth area......
Atco, I remember it well....... 1. Atco Dragway period ad 2. Jade Grenade at Atco 3.Beebe and Mulligan vs Ivo at Atco 4. Petes Patriot AMX at Atco 5. Time slip for Jungle Jim in 1971 at Atco Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I think something like one of these two could have been used as the donor vehicle for the one used in the Mooneyes photo. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
