Bristol continues to be NASCAR's most popular track from a spectator standpoint. Otherwise they would have dumped it years ago. I find it interesting the Dale Jr is outperfroming his new teammates. I think Dale jr is showing he has what it takes

I don't think that is either the reason or appropriate to suggest. It is actually offensive. I know many fans from New England, California, and even here is south Florida that make the trip to Bristol. They are all college educated and drive Audis, Benzes and BMW's. I know few that drive a Chevy or a Ford unless its a Suburban or an Expedition. NASCAR is still popular in the deep south, but those fans will someday be former fans as NASCAR is taking a more upscale direction in their marketing and slowly making attendance not affordable for the working man and woman. Which is too bad for those long time fans.

I think it's popular because of its stadium set-up, you can see the entire track up close, and because of the constant action. It is also one of the last remaining tracks of what NASCAR used to be: short high banked ovals with plenty of action.

Americans are lazy and want to sit in the stands w/ their beer and hotdogs.
I know the sport and the people pretty well. I installed digital video and the telementry (RPMs, GPS for track location, 3 dimesional accellerometers to measure G-Forces,....) in NASCAR cars at probably all south-eastern tracks with former employer and rode around them all at speed testing equipment too. Sure seemed like a bunch of yahoos to me although most were very nice (Buddy Baker cracked me up the most). I've been involved in all types of racing. Oval racing is just step above dragracing for requiring talent as a driver. And the NASCAR cars are set-up to practically drive themselves around the track themselves anyway. Yeah, the high banks and Gforces were always cool for about 3-4 laps, then it was boring and at Bristol the driver is always trying to look thru the A-pillar to see where they were going.

I can go out on the Capital Beltway and see real idiots speeding around in a circle on each other bumpers for free.

It is quite apparent that you have never driven a vehicle such as a NASCAR car around an oval at top speed, or you would never have made such a ridiculous comment about the cars driving themselves, or the level of driving skill required. First your comment about hillbillys, and now this tripe. Irrespective of your installation ability, you have no knowledge of the sport, especially if your time frame is Buddy Baker, and you have no idea of the people involved in NASCAR today. I am sure when thy met you, they probably thought the same of you, a real yahoo. It is all a matter of perspective.

Futhermore, based on your comments and your attitude, you have absolutely no credible knowledge of racing whatsoever.

for the record...buddy is pretty funny.

i will not forget showing up at charlotte speedway (that's correct...before it was lowes) in my 86 930 in guards red. buddy comes over to me and says in his very verile voice..."peter, that used to be gold? I swear that was my old car!" i said, "ah buddy...i'm sure your gold one is out there somewhere...they did make a bunch of these things."

i looked like i must have been b s ing him and that my car had to have been re-painted!

i still smile when i think about that. and btw...buddy could wheel the car around the oval!!!!

The suspension and most notably the extreme camber settings of the inside front wheel allows the car to practically drive itself around a oval track. Real driving skills aren't used. Its foot on the gas, lift some and turn left. In challenging racing series; drivers shift hundreds to thousands times per race, adjust braking points for corners of varying degrees rather than just lifting for just 2 or 4 corners and have to turn right as well as left. The entertaining NASCAR races are those on the roadrace circuits when ringer roadracers get the ride and show the good ole' boys how to drive.

    This says it all:

Unless Buddy died in the past 2 years, he is still involved with the Buck Baker's racing school. My time frame is 3 years ago and its not really like NASCAR technology has leaped any substainsal levels as most other motorsports in which cars aren't so limited by the rules and have many more technical gizmos like traction control, forced induction, electronic differentials, launch control, composite materials galore, .... People are more resilient to change than machinery.

I've won National championships and competed at National level in several different forms of motorsports. I'm no spectator groupie wanna-be.

i actually agree with the points you make. nascar is THE most pure form of the "the best CAR wins".

    Really!?

Actually "the best CAR wins" award in my opinion and I elluded to earlier in this post goes to dragracing. Its the combination of HP, traction and gearing that win. There is little technique to launching the car and then shifting. Reaction times which are not a driving talent but are counted anyway. Heck, they don't even have to turn left. I competed on the national level on the import scene awhile and didn't see where to improve after perfecting the launch other than to dump more $ into the motor. While I admire the balls it takes the Pro dragracers must have, I don't really see much driving talent in it.

Was doing NOPI. Was better for bikini contest and jello wrestling than racing.

Still doing rally, hence my screen name. And Pikes Peak Hillclimb.

    Some results and pics here.

    Flame away.
We got left, we got right, straights, jumps, bumps, cliffs, ice, snow, mud, pavement, great scenery, nature, real cars on real roads real fast. BTW, a stockcar is not stock. And while NASCAR claims to have its roots in old mooonshine running, they've moved far away from where the came from. Rally racing is 'drive it like you stole it' on backcountry roads thesedays.

    Gee...thanks a lot...

I have been road racing for 20+ years and the first title I won was in Super Pro bracket racing in my dragster.

I suggest that if you think there is no talent required to drag race, you ought to take Frank Hawley's Top Alcohol Funny Car course. I doubt you will be even able to properly execute a burnout, let alone complete a run down the track. I'm not saying that it takes as much talent to drag race as it does to road race but I would certainly not denigrate the sport to the extent you have, it takes a lot of courage to keep your foot in it at 270 mph (as I have done in an A/Fuel dragster).

You need to go read and see who wins MOST of the nascar road races, that is the most uninformed statement I have read in a long, long time.

Are we sorry nascar is TRYING to hold costs down and make safer cars ?

Try to follow this: nascar not = F1. F1 not = nascar. nascar not = much of anything, does that make it BAD ?
I don't love nascar, and I don't hate nascar, I like all forms of racing.
Do I like the fact that all we need to do is watch the last 5 laps of the Daytona 500 to see who will win ?
I like that about as much as I like watching the last 5 laps of an F1 race where a guy has a 10 second lead...

So this makes you better than anyone else ? Such as any fan in any sport ?? Damn, I forgot who pays the bills.....
Listen, I'm happy you have done well, you probably earned it, but I know quite a few total morons that have won
national championships in all kinds of sports, not just motorsports. Just because anyone won something does not
make them an authority on it.

Everyone has opinions on what the 'best' form of racing is, and you know what ?
    Nobody is wrong.
If you like it - then follow it, root for it, get involved in it.
But don't diss something just because YOU don't like it.

Dave I noticed that your rally car is prepared by Can Jam Motorsports. I am a close family friend of Stewart's sons that work alongside him their shop in Toronto. I got the priviledge to hang out with the Subaru Canada Rally Team team during the 2004 and 2005 seasons. Got to a chance to go for a spin with Tom McGreer and Patrick Richard. Those were fun times.

CanJam rocks. They are servicing 2 cars this season. The car we are campaigning is the last Subaru Canada car built for McGeer. And Rich Wong can drive like a madman. 2nd OA at TallPines 2006. Pat is back is the driver's seat for 2008 except with RocketRally building 08 STi. Thinking of quiting my factory Mazda USA ride to concentrate up in Canada this year. Give CanJam (Duane, Kevin, Nicholas) a call and come out and play with us.

    Your reply:

    then you said:

How a person reads 'just some competition experience' out of that is beyond me.
You very well do have some credible racing knowledge, which just boggles me that you could make such a statement.
Folks dig on folks that like oval racing, saying it is boring, but the same could be said about drag racing: green light - floor it - lift a few seconds later. Road racing - zoom by, not to be seen again for a minute or four....

ALL racing is good, even demo derbys - it's just whatever trips your trigger....
