Alonso has already impressed in mediocre cars. He won at Renault when the Renault was second-rate (I am talking prior to his WDC years) and he was very impressive his roolie season at Minardi.

I think Alonso drove very well at Australia considering how visibly poor handling his car is. He is certainly handicapped by a crappy Renault but I think he will do surprisingly well in the points standings, all things considered.

I would add that I have a wager with 355 that Alonso finishes higher in the final point standings than Massa. Thus far I am looking very good... :p

I am sure Hamilton is lying awake at night, worried about Massa...

He's just biding his time with a Ferrari contract in his pocket for 2009... ;)

If the Mclaren is indeed the car this year his closest competition will be Heiki.
Hopefully this is as close as Fred gets to the podium.

I'll take that bet all day long. It's not Alonzo, the Renault just doesn't have the legs. I think you're dreaming here.

My wager has nothing to do with Alonso or his Renault... :p

    You in for $100?

    I'm in.
Remember that Alonso was the beneficiary of heavy attrition. The Renault couldn't even out run the STR Ferraris

Doesn't matter much if Massa can't finish a race...

True, but he doesn't need to finish very many to out point the amemic Renault.

Yes, Fred was incredible in the Minardi and it was amazing he didn't have a ride the following year. That said, 355 has already spent your wager. Almost easy money imo.

The WDC requirement in 2008; a Mclaren or Ferrari. End of story. I'd bet that BMW will win a race this year, a la Berger or Nannini in the Benetton. BMW are due.

Smart move, given the trajectory of the US dollar in the markets lately...

I think it's going to be a helluva year.

It would not shock me one bit to see Heidfeld or Ruebens win a race, as well as 'the usual gang'.
With a few folks blowing up or ending up in the kitty litter, there WILL be surprise winners.

No traction control hopefully will even things out.

And y'all need to keep in mind - doing well in F1 runs in cycles, don't be shocked if the team you
picked to be 4th, 5th or 6th in team standings ends up second.

PS - Most of you guys boggle my mind. Only a few months ago a bzillion folks were rating Massa BETTER than Kimi.
Funny how inheriting a WDC can change folks' opinions. I guess we could ask J-V...
