Sorry for the somewhat repeated post, but I suspect that my question may have been burried in my other related post (http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=190256). Surprised that 1000 people haven't jumped all over it with the answer.

So.... surely SOMEBODY knows what this thing is and what it's used for; the manual says something like "light sensor" if I recall. What does this mean?

It is for the climate control, so the system can tell how much interior heat there is.

Not just heat. Regulates the climate control.

NOT BS, check it out here.

    Quote:

"While the interior of the car can be controlled to maintain the predetermined temperature through heating or air conditioning, comfort is not assured unless there is a mechanism to compensate for the apparent increase in temperature caused by sunlight being directed upon the occupants when the sun is at a low azimuth angle. The solar, or sunshine, sensor is used to provide information to the ventilation system control as to the direction and angle of sunlight entering the vehicle."

When you go to Vegas, you notice those dark plastic domes on the ceilings of the casinos that shroud the surveillance cameras so you don't know which direction they're pointed? Well the dome on the dash hides a very tiny camera on a servo controlled mount. The long stick in the middle with the shiny ball on the top? It doubles as a gear selector and the camera positioner.

In reality, this is only what Ferrari want you to think... It's really a government installed tracking device that alerts area police you are driving and it relays speed and data to the FBI so as to eventually prove that the majority of Ferrari drivers are wreckless and thereby prevent the company from importing the cars. Some say Lamborghini are behind it.... Hmmm.....
