How many keys did the F50 come with from Ferrari? I have heard that the car came with 13 keys and a bottle of champagne, gloves, and shoes?

Why does mine have only one, which opens the door and turns the ignition for the start button? Did they do modifications or did I purchase a morphodite?

Gus, question: did you purchase this F40 all by yourself, with the help of a 'freind', or with the help of a dedicated specialist?

    Just curious...

I bought it through Jim Lyons and Gene Berns, the editor of the Supercar Market Letter and the so-called Ferrari Guru, was my advisor and consultant and performed the PPI for me. Gene is the person that has given me the green light to wire the funds and was at my home when the car arrived. He was not cheap either. He is recommending that I do not drive my car since it has 13,300 miles on it and to carpet the car.

The car I purchased was the vehicle that Silicon Valley had it on consignment for many months. It is still on Jim Lyons website under the sold section.

    Joe,

I might be interesting in selling my 2005 Carrera GT and 1992 F40 as a pair deal if you know anyone interested. I am not greedy and will be fair. I just got a call from my bodyshop and I have five cars that are in the process of getting completed. I can even offer financing to the right individual.

It is a Euro model and definitely 3 keys. Both gas caps have locks. The key for them is the smallest of the three.

An f40 with 13K is perfect to drive since its not a low miles car. 500 miles maybe, but not with 13K. IMHO no car should be carpetted, its a crime. They are cars intended to be driven. All this 500 mile nonsense will be forgotten about in 20 years, because all these cars will then be restored or not. A 35 year old F40 with 500 miles in my opinion should be worth much less than a 35 year old car which has done 50K and been restored. I know of a number of super low miles cars that needed 50-100K spending on them in order to be useable. As long as you didn't pay an investment price for your 13K car you should be all set to just go and enjoy it.

I think the Euro spec F40's DO have 3 keys, ignition, doors/latches and fuel doors. The Euro spec F40's have different fuel caps then the USA spec ones....

Thanks for the input. What did your friend/friends need to do with the ultra low mileage car that needed $50K-100K. I was always curious about that. There is an F40 with under 200 miles listed for $825K. I have never have seen how people make such a major issue with mileage than the Ferrari marketplace. For me, I rather save $200K and purchase a pristine car with some mileage on it than a garage queen at a major premium. Every auto advisor tells me that I am making a mistake, but I do not care. Its my money, and I am buying the car so I can enjoy it and if I make money on it, I got lucky and if I lose some, so be it; at least I had a particular car. I like your thinking. Again, like to hear more of your thoughts.

That's the rub isn't it - the market in the US does seem to have a love of super low mileage cars. Look at the Enzo market, 3 or 400K for a <1K vs 4 or 5K. And that's on a car where a significant proportion of cars have had new engines. Would I rather have a 5K car with a replaced engine or a 500 mile car on a new engine? Interesting question.

On the F40, if its not used, its a case of having to go through everything. Just taking the car apart is expensive because of the turbos etc, as soon as you need to put new turbos or clutch on the car if bearings or some such need replacing the bill can rapidly escalate.

I'm currently replacing the wastegate on my 288GTO, its a simple gasket inside the thing that has a big hole in it, not sure whether its time or use that has tired it out, but it would seem that one cannot buy the gasket, you have to buy a new wastegate. The part alone is 5K.

IMO on a turbo supercar you should be budgeting 10 or 20K a year in random jobs and service versus the 3-8K a year you might on a new F-car. Clearly one can avoid this if one doesn't use the car, but the market seems to ignore all of this to price low mile cars higher.

    Good luck with your car!

The Euro F40 has a diferent fuel filler cap to the US40 .... at least this how I found it to be .. I had a US car and at diferent times two Euro F40s. The Euro cars had locking fuel caps (both sides) and undid with the same key ... therefore the Euro F40 had three keys ... one for ignition, one for doors and front/rear compartment locks another for fuel fillers.. The F50 had two keys only.

    Dan,

You are so on the money about the low-mileage fascination that the USA market worships.

However, to me, CONDITION & TUNING is everything. Witness the very low-mileage F40 that is unable to sell as now-educated prospects pass over it due to its average condition.

Remember too as these cars age, mileage will become irrelevant and condition & tuning will be all. Do I care what miles arre on my Miura SV? But have you seen its condition and how it runs?

BTW, the WORST thing you can do with a low-mileage F40 that has not been thoroughly fettled with major belt service and beyond is to suddenly press it into service with a spate of activity. Common-sense (and experience with these cars, if you really have any) will tell you that they have to be eased into peak performance. A low-milage car suddenly taken to the track is a disaster impending.

    Can you say "flat bed"?
