Me again with another question or two. My 1984 QV has a leak in the A/C system and thus it's been blowing warm air (the leak is confirmed by dye). In anticipation of getting it fixed, I purchased a couple of Freon 12 cans off ebay (90% cheaper than what a shop will charge me for the stuff). Question: are the A/C systems in the old 308s so far out that a local foreign car repair shop cannot work on it? Or, should I take it to a Ferrari-savvy repair center for A/C work?

Second question: up in front I see that there's a heater box for the interior heat. I also understand that there are filters in those boxes and I bet mine's 24+ years old by now and in serious need of replacing. How do I get to it?

Thanks everyone for the information on the forum.

    Andrew

Most repair shops should be able to charge your A/C system for you, or you can do it yourself with and installation kit readily available. If you're questioning if the leak can be fixed, it should be no problem if it's in an easily accessible area.

For the filters, remove the spare tyre well and you'll see the heaters. Go to your local hardware store and buy a sheet of window A/C filter material and cut to size to fit the heater cores.

DO NOT convert the system to 134!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that is if you want it to blow 15-20 degrees warmer than the best it could ever with R12.

That's a simple fact. Sorry. Fix the leak and R12 all the way. I am in the process of re-converting a car back to 12 at this very moment. I tried 134 with several shops over a couple of years and I have had it. It's over and screw the %*#@ ozone layer. I don't care.

The old 12 systems just are no designed to work well with 134 and you will never be completely happy.
