That would be great, in the meantime I found them on pg 140 of the Countach reunion thread http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=129254&highlight=lowbody&page=140
Amazing, reminds me sort of the reverse of the old NASCAR builders who would build a 9/10th scale version of a stock car for the track. So, did Lamborghini start building them builder to fit us larger Americans?
If those are the quotes That is insane remember what we talked about id also be curious as to what shop quoted what price. Remember the more items that you can remove before the delivery will cut down hours that they have to remove it. So if you are going to have most of the car striped motor out, suspension off?? Got a dolly? That would save you a ton of that estimate money. I also do not trust anyone's word on paint jobs. Results speak for themselves Go look at jobs they have done that the owners confirm where it was done and what guy shot the paint! CUT any dry, also a lot of the "show paint" cars are not really done well The finishing touch is the sanding and buffing and that is the most labor of any paint job in my eyes and the only way I would paint a car to that standard is to completely strip the car and paint it just like the factory did. My question is what type of paint was originally on a 81 countach was it a base clear coat system or a old lacquer paint? If your going for originality that makes a big difference so the question is what was sprayed at the factory in 1981 Im going to say lacquer.
Sorry but I'm a sucker for a black Countach, silver just doesn't evoke many emotions as opposed to black. Anyway, your car, your decision. Great find and awesome rebuild The Countach is definitely one of my favourite cars.
Pretty good assessment there. While the Italians get credit for building beautiful cars, frequently their paintwork has left a bit to be desired.
visiting from Ferrari thread......great story, great find. Have a blast and always have a chuckle when you drive and think what you paid. Plus the difference in price paid vs. restore just makes you want to spend more to fix it. Drive well Jon
Well I figured I was right what year did lamborghini stop using laquer? And Kie im going to guess that since most states banned the use of laquer your state probably has banned laquer as well so Id think hard about someone who claims a show job, because a show job would be in original paint not in a 2 part base clear coat system.
kie, don't mean to be braggin' on my car, but my Countach has a REALLY nice paint job on it. The restoration was done by George Evans shop and whoever shot this car with red paint did an amazing job on it. Best I have ever seen! Perhaps check to see who their paint guy is.
Those quotes are insane you say? Insanely high or insanely low? I thought they were quite reasonable given the scope of this job and the results I desire. How would it help you phrogs to know which shop 3000 miles away from you on the other side of the country quoted which price? Yes I know I could save money by doing some of the body strip/parts removal and such. I could save money but spend time, which I don't have that much of. Also, I am of the opinion that this will go much better if the person who takes it apart puts it back together. I'm afraid I will have to go against your advice and trust people's word for picking my painter. The two I currently have it narrowed down to are so far the most highly recommended of the 20 or so people I have asked their opinion of. I have seen examples of both of their work, and to my untrained eye in both cases the work looked great. Yes the drivetrain/suspension will be out/off and the car will be on some sort of other rolling device. I do not own a dolly, no, but I do still have my Evel Knievel stunt cycle. In short, I despise body/paintwork on any car. I have the highest respect and admiration for the guys who have the patience and skill to do this sort of thing. I am not afraid to pay someone whatever it takes to make it right.
Thanks man. I've spoken with George and he has offered to just do the entire car which is actually sounding pretty darn good.
Actually, neither of the 2 shops I like right now claim anything about the quality of their work. Both of them rely solely upon their reputation and the quality of the cars they have done.
Kie, the entire restoration done on my car is photo documented - and they did amazing work! I am in awe at it EVERY time I inspect (like every day ), if you ever want to see the 'album' of photos or even better look over my car - you are welcome to go through it. I am near skiing and Lake Tahoe - not a bad place to get away and come see what Evans Automotive's work looks like.
Sure seemed to me you didnt know which way was up or down in yoru search just trying to lend a little help you know from a guy who is good with body work. Like you said reputation and quality of the cars. I listen to the cars But I think the quotes you received are way to high, but its your money Im so glad that I helped you get into that countach. But you missed one of my questions What type of paint are they going to use?
Becuase I asked? For some reason you seem to think that across the country is so far away hahaha If they are so good maybe id like to send a car to them to have work done you never know.
Just read the whole thing......what a great story! I HOPE YOU KNOW HOW MANY OF US WISH WE WERE IN YOUR SHOES. From an automotive standpoint, you are a very lucky man to be living through this!
hello kie congrats on the countach find... are you the same kie robertson that use to have a blue 71 alfa GTV with techno's that sold to japan? cheers hyena
Sorry jimangle, you aren't going to be able to wrangle that out of me. I'm pretty sure I got a good deal though, if that helps
Hey Kei, Did you ever find out what was wrong with the clutch? How about an update on things? Sincerely Vic
Whoa now. Stop the presses, this is a true way-back moment. Are you the same gentleman that stole from me my pride and joy and took her back to Japan? Those wheels were like $400 per unit in 1992! That car had a Tilton aluminum flywheel, Carello rods, Recaros, Sabelts, huge carbs, ports, blah, blah, blah. Here I am doing my best Nuvolari impression at turn 9 in Portland sometime in the early 90's: Image Unavailable, Please Login
Nope. Just a '71 GTV 1750 I found in the back of a shop needing almost everything. Damn there seems to be a theme developing here. 2 liter conversion with every known Alfa hot-rod trick we knew of at the time. I managed to blow it up 2 or 3 times before I got it right. I hope whoever has it in Japan enjoys it like I did.
Vic I have not investigated further, no. I'm just assuming it needs a new clutch. The pedal goes up and down with very little resistance however it does seem to go in to all the gears proper. I've been soliciting paint and body guys, and found one I like. At the same time I've been trying hard not to look at the offers that have come in for the car "as-is" as a result of people seeing it here.
