Why isn't Ferrari in Indy racing?

Because it is a feeder series to F1?

My guess is that they would run in a European (GP2) feeder series first, so they can develop drivers for their team. Hey that's a good idea.

On a side note, I was looking up who Hamilton drove for prior to F1, to see if McLaren ran a feeder series, and I found out that the team principal for Hamilton was Nicolas Todt.

 

F1 is the panicle of auto racing but: I want to see Ferrari racing Indy and NASCAR. Lets all go balls to the wall. It could happen....

 

I believe Ferrari signed an agreement to be engine manufacturer for A1 Grand Prix, so they are expanding a little bit outside F1.

If I spent time here trying to criticize people's grammar or typing, as some people want to do, I wouldn't have enough time to read what I want on Fchat. If your point is that I'd rather have everyone participate here, rather than offend someone or hurt someone's feelings, then you are correct, Sir.

 

Why would Ferrari race in a series where they can't build the chassis? Wouldn't make sense to be only an engine supplier when their other racing series are chassis and engine. Plus I would doubt Tony George would want the chassis battle between Ferrari and Dallara as that would escalate costs and be prohibitive to the "everything's equal" series they are going for.

Alfa Romeo did use the developed Ferrari V-8 Indy car engine. Different valve covers. True dat.

 

F1 is the NBA - Indy is the WNBA (but less butch)

 

F1 is still the best of motor racing.. Ferrari is doing well in it.

Ferrari has sports cars in Le Mans.. they do well there too.

Then there's the A1 GP, where they also provide the safety car (599)

Indy is run by Hondas now, so no place for Ferrari there... and no interest either.

Nascar? Ferrari just wouldn't fit in there, nor would they want to...

As memory serves me right... I think Ferrari's aborted Indy engine did actually race... under the guise of Alfa... remember in the late 80's and early 90's when Alfa had an engine in indy... it was taken from the Ferrari designed motor.... I dont think it ever won a race, but I could be wrong... I think it just never had the development needed. that was when Fiat took over Alfa... was used to promote brand awarness in the USA... dont think it worked!

 

I kind of have the feeling that my question was mis-understood. I did not mean the Indianapolis 500, I meant the Indy car series of racing. They race like a Grand Prix type racing on city streets, not just round and round a big oval.

 

Yes, but Indy Car is a spec series with Dallara chassis and Honda engines. Ferrari could build a car, teams could buy it, and they would not be allowed to race unless they changed the rules.

mind you, there was one Ferrari Indy construction in the 80's... never competed though

 

IMHO, top level open-wheel racing should include engineering and technical competition among racing teams. F1 provides that in large measure, while IRL doesn't. Even if Ferrari were somehow allowed to participate in IRL, I doubt they would have any interest. However, since Ferrari seems to be moving more and more mass-market, who knows what marketing moves they may want to make in the future?

 

They might not have raced in CART, but they did go round the track at races.
