Hate to tell you but the Mobil1 "performance driving formula" has been reformulated. 15/50 is no longer available and has not been on most store shelves for the better part of a year now. The new formulation is the 5/50 mix.

The experts will tell you that this product will still give you the protection of the 50W at the higher temp range but will give you the lowest friction 5W at the lower temp range. My Lotus 910 engine rattles like heck with this stuff in it.

I'm not sure if you'd even want to be sourcing outdated product to satisfy your viscosity requirements. Old oil apparently can vary greatly from rated specs with age. There's also been a very heated online discussion about adverse reactions with valves/seals etc with the new additive package that goes with this new oil.

I'm seriously thinking about switching back to dino oil.

Steve, i heard the 15/50 was to be back on the shelf....is that BS now then ?

I was thinking of going 5w/50...ive had great success with the Mobil 1 product, would hate to switch again....you dont like the 5/50 then ?

A quick look through the Canadian website only shows 5W50 Mobil1. Zipped through to Mobil1.com and low and behold; Back by popular demand 15W50. Pigs do fly I guess.

    Heres a link http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil_1_15W-50_.aspx

Hopefully it does make its way back here soon as I believe that the 5W50 doesn't provide the same anti wear for valvetrain as the original does. Especially on a cold start. Lots of buzz about leaking seals as well but no solid proof there either.

Rick I run 0w40 Mobil 1 in my 308 (available at Partsource) and think it is great. No leaks, tons of oil pressure, the car cranks with more gusto and revs more freely. I would NEVER go back to 20W50 oil. Ignore the owners manual, it was written 30 years ago and oil technology is on a different planet since then.

I've been using Mobil1 5W50 in my 92' 348tb for 2 years now with no issues. Ideally I'd prefer 15W50. I have my oil (gearbox & engine) analysed by Blackstone Labs annually and the viscosity of my drained Mobil1 5W50 engine oil falls in the middle of the range of where it should be so I'm not worried about whether it's 5W or 15W.

Robbie, Ciao !! I was thinking of going 10W60...on both...but i think i have found the 15/50....i personally dont use the owners manual in either of the cars, but wish to standardize on something for both.....

Just an FYI . . . oils for older cars >20 yrs

Oil formulations change. Olders cars like a formulation that includes Zn etc additives that are now missing from most modern oils. Castrol is no longer the old Castrol, Kendall, Mobile 1 have all changed in the last several years etc etc. There are threads after threads about oil in the older Porsche groups. Particularily in boxer type engines. I don't know Ferrari engines but here is a thread that is worth a read.

    http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?t=367300

The thread is 42 pages long (and counting), but the poster sums it up in the 1st post. Brad Penn Racing Oil is the best 20W-50 currently available.

And post # 684 has these:

"Here we go. I've tabulated the averages from every pull and it looks like Brad Penn and Swepco were basically identical in performance, but the Swepco edged out just by a hair with a lower BSFC. . . . Just for identification, Swepco 15w40 is #1, Brad Penn 20w50 is #4, Royal Purple Max Cycle 20w50 is #5, and #9 and #11 are Mobil 1 4T 10w40 and Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w50 respectively.

#12 and 16 were Mobil 1 0w20 and an unspecified racing 0w20 oil, as we were wondering what effect viscosity would have on our testing. By no means would we recommend runnning anything that light ever!" . . . by Charles Navarro
