How Much Is A Bee Hive Worth?

A friend of mine just found a HUGE and I mean HUGE bee hive in their back yard. Someone told them that they know a guy that can come get it because he sells them. I don't want someone trucking off a piece of gold. Maybe it's just a few bucks but if not, I want to know before he leaves with it...

Any ideas?

 

I was sitting in my back yard on day, enjoying a tasty beverage, when a huge black cloud of bees swarmed in. They began circling the trunk of the old Catalpa tree and quickly settled into the giant crease going up the side of the trunk.

I watched them for a few hours then decided I didn't need a big nest of bees in my backyard. I started calling around to get them removed and everyone seemed to think it was a $300 job. I finally called a beekeeper and he happily shop-vac them from my tree for free. There was no value in my bees.

Put it on Craigslist or Ebay, you never know who collects those things.

 

They are not a gold mine. Not one swarm anyway. Here is one company selling a swarm and a Queen for $69.00 The equipment to remove the swarm costs more then that. But if you wanted to get in the Honey bee business then ou might want to take a shot. My brother in law has honey bees. They are good around a farm for Pollination.

I'm interested in this thread too. My father-in-law is a beekeeper in Ukraine. While he was visiting, he created a bee box which he loaded and left on my back patio. Unfortunately for me, by the time I got home from the airport, the bees had found it and now I have a huge swarm living in the bee box. I promised my father-in-law I would not kill the bees, but I'm interested in hearing about any bee keepers that would want to come and get them...

I had a huge hive in the walls of my kitchen...they ripped all the drywall out and the hive literally went the 20' span of the wall.

Cost me $1800

Oh I discovered the hive when one summer my walls were seeping honey through the paint.

LOL!! My brother & I and his son did this at Easter dinner at my inlaws... except in the Chicago area we used snowballs, not rocks.

Oh... after MANY tags with lesser snowballs - I made one about the size of a snow man's head, hurled it up, & it made contact. No more hive

No kidding - why not just start licking the walls when it comes out? That's awesome - no hassle from the bees and free honey to boot!

 

You guys are playing around, I know, but seriously, bees are like bears. As long as you don't show any fear, you will be OK - the bees will want to take a look but they will see you're not afraid and they will move on. If you do get a sting, best to lie on the ground motionless and play dead. Bees only attack live targets.

So, OP, you can safely throw rocks at the hive to get rid of it - the trick is get to about 20 feet away, toss as big a rock as you can, and immediately lie down on the ground motionless. You will be safe - the bees won't know where it came from and will leave you alone. Try it out!

 

contact a local beekeeper, they will come and get them usually for free. there is a shortage of bees these days. they're not sure why but something is killing them. this is not a good thing as bee are the main polinators for many crops. i have a friend back in MD who keeps them. farmers pay him well to bring his little dudes on his truck to their farms to do their thing. whenever he gets the chance he removes them for free. but i think alabama is a little too far for him.

Are you talking about a real bee hive (as in honey bee) or are you talking about a big paper wasp nest?

A bee hive is inside something, I don't know how you could really mobilize one with out destroying it.

 

The Bee business is actually pretty lucrative. Like any other business it takes time to build a clientele.
Most of these business’s will remove them at no cost.

Not true with Africanized bees (Killer Bees). They exhibit what is termed "hyper-defensive" behavior. In other words you don't have to be a threat, just a perceived threat. Lay down and play dead and they will continue to sting, and sting...........and sting. They are making inroads in to many of the southern states of the USA. I did much research after being stung over 400 times in the jungles of Central America. That was a bad day.

 

Race car driver A.J. Foyt did - he was clearing brush on a cat tractor when some of them pesky africanized female workers decided to attack (maybe he kind of ran over something?) -

It being hard to find deep water in arid S.W. Texas, our hero dived into a mud flat and came out of it OK.

I bet those bees that did sting him didn't have the guts to do that again...
