The starter consists of a motor and a solenoid. The purpose of the solenoid is to push a lever that in turn engages the the gear on the motor which in turn spins the flywheel. if the starter is spinning and not engaging, the likely cause is the solenoid. The starter is easy to remove. Disconnect the battery, remove two bolts, a couple of wires, and slide it out. Then take it down to an auto electric shop and have them repair it. I did mine last year and it cost me 59 bucks.

Thanks that really sounds like the problem. I will do just that tomorrow , pull it out and take it to the shop, we have a good one in town here for alts and staters.
