Appreciate all the advice. I'm not ready to wave the white flag just yet as I still have a full head of hair. If it wasn't for my scar I'd never have noticed.

I went to my doctor earlier this morning. He said he would prescribe Propecia so long as I'd be willing to do blood work. Only downside is that I would have to take it indefinitely. He did mention that Rogaine could be more effective. Which contradicts what I've heard in this thread. I think I should to talk to a specialist.

Propecia is a lot more user friendly, just take 1 pill once a day and thats it

Rogaine you have to use 2 x a day, you have to spray some messy goop into your hand rub it into your head, comb your hair, clean up the messy goop

its annoying and it takes 6 months before you see any results

w propecia I saw results almost instantly, it probably depends on each patient

Thanks for not "waving the flag"! What a bunch of quitters here!

I was on Rogaine for a long time before my specialist suggested Propecia. I was amazed at how much better it worked.
BTW, you can get Proscar which has the same ingredient as Propecia. You cut the pills in 4 for the same amount in Propecia so the cost ends up being like $15 a month. But many many in the know would also add Rogaine to your routine IF you are not yet satisfied with your progress.

    Now...go get 'em!

With proscar or propecia, what are the side effects or things to watch out for? I believe I cannot donate blood if I'm on either.

My friend just last year called me up:

"Dude, I'm holding the clippers with a 1 guard on it. Should I do it?"
Me: "Go for it man, you're already there. And if it not now, you're putting off the inevitable for a later date."
    "Good point."

Ended up working for him, and he actually likes it. I decided to not worry about mine. It's thinning in the back, guess it'll happen soon enough. Once it get's to wear others notice it more....BZZZZZZZZZZZZZ....GONE!

I don't know about the blood thing, but I did find this article.... http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/propecia_ad.htm

They say, as do other sources, that the incidence of E.D. are small, but I've read otherwise from users. It sounds more like 40% than 2%. I "felt the effects" of Proscar but lived with it for years. Then I heard about Provillus which is the natural alternative, and switched to that. The results for me have been about the same, but with no side effects. But for the "sure thing" you could go with Propecia(Proscar) and see if there's a problem.

    This is simply not true.

Propecia regrows hair in about 50% of men, and halts further loss in about 45%. So if you are in that group of 95% of guys, it's not inevitable and you *can* stop it.

When I was around 30yrs old I noticed my hair start to recede. It started quite gradually but then in a period of about 6 months it receeded markedly. I was sort of freaked out and got on Propecia. It stopped it in it's tracks. And it hasn't shown to wear off over time, so if you start Propecia as a 22 yr old man, for example, you should be able to take it for life and not lose hair to male pattern baldness.

As for the folks looking into saw palmetto, it's completely unproven. Honestly folks, if there was an "herbal" cure for baldness, it would be marketed as a real medicine and prescribed by doctors. There are many 'natural' or organic products that really do work and they are sold appropriately. Then there are sheysters and hippie "herbalists" who sell things that *don't* work or aren't proven at all, and their only back up is the story about the 'medical establishment that wants to keep you sick', etc.

Propecia works in over 95% of men. Why worry about trying something else? Unless you are affected by the side effects of Propecia, there's no reason IMO to look elsewhere other than to save money by going with something like Proscar, whihc is the same thing anyway :)

my grandfather on my dad's side had a head full of grey hair when he passed. my mom's side, well he was bald when he passed. my dad is in he;s 50s now, and he;s practically bald. my hair started thinning when i was about 20 i think.

at first, i got all panicky, as my hair was really long, almost till my shoulders. i've always thought that this thing would never happen to me at this age. ( i'm 22 now ).

but then, i took a risk, and shaved my head bald. besides the 'hassle' to shave my head every 3-4 days once, trust me, its one of my best or if not the best look i've ever had. chics dig bald guys.. :)

They are like "all over" the internet.....haha.

Here is just one link to buy it....http://www.buyprovillus.com/men/ingredients.php

A nice page that shows the ingredients, and referenced research to show it's more than
just Saw Palmetto as many think. And if you find it's not strong enough for you in the end
you can always use a bit of both, as some say that works too.

my dads family all has thick hair and my moms side every single male is bald as can be, when i was about 22 i started to notice it thinning quite drastically in the front i tired for another few years but realized that if i didn't do anything about it i would be one of those "comb-over" idiots that my friends say i should grow...so when i was living in tel-aviv and couldn't find a barber i just shaved it all off! best thing i could have done it's been a few years since i shaved it and can say now if i didn't do anything about it and kept it long i would look like a complete fool or some sort of chemo patient. just buzz it off!

BTW: yes you read correctly there are NO barbers in tel-aviv all "stylists" and i'm not a stylists kind of guy.

edit: actually i went to the stylist after giving up on my search for a barber and an hour and a 100 shekels later i had an extremly gay looking faux-hawk and thats when i went home and immediatly shaved it.

Just returned from my hair replacement surgery, it was under local anaesthesia, novacane actually

They cut a piece out of the back of my head about 4" long and 1/4" wide, looked like a hairy piece of bacon, then they stitched me back up

then the Dr put 1200 holes in the front, temples, & top of my head, w all the novacane I wasnt feeling much pain

The the assistants plugged the 1200 holes w tiny hair follicles, no pain there either

it looks pretty bad now but I see the outline where my new hairline will be & if it works out it will rock :)

Now its 5 hours later & after a vicadin and some antibiotics, I feel like a cat is digging its claws into my head

well thats the price of vanity

I imagine it will be less painful tomorrow

The new hair is very short as they shaved it before they removed it, my head will be 1 large scab in a week, very attractive LOL the new hair should fall out in 2 weeks but the follicles remain and they should sprout again in 4 months so I'll give you an update in September

    Good for you man.

It seems like the solution of the stars.

Has anyone noticed the difference of Steve Carrell from "The Office"?
In their first season he had a severely receeding hairline (Just look at the
Season 1 DVD box cover), and now he looks perfect. I'm sure that wasn't
    just with Rogaine. ;)

Now William, be careful not to scratch!

Todays not too bad apart from the fact that the top of my head looks like a hairy hamburger, it aint pretty

Sleeping last night was a lot better than I thought it would be, I only woke up once at 4 am but went right back to sleep till 8:30

but its looking better, no bleeding, no oozing, no pain, its just a little itchy but nothing unbearable

I'll be staying in till Monday

The new hairline is a visible improvment over the original and my girlfriend said the stitches in back were very nicely done so it seems so far this Dr is good

Balls to you for taking it this far..."surgery" is always something that makes me nervous. Just the same, please keep us updated.

It's said that of 5 men, 1 will keep his hair his entire life....another will go bald very early, and the other 3 will gradually lose their hair over the course of their life. We age, we live in bodies that decay & decline over time, we die....it's an inevitable process. There will always be creams, skin-conditioners, "proceedures" and things that slow or even temporarily halt the process....but in the end we just have to submit to the reality.

Just remember, whenever you see a senior citizen or someone in a wheelchair, they're looking at you walking and wishing they could. Take nothing for granted, appreciate every moment and what you have; all things are fleeting.

Making fun of someone for hair-loss isn't really all that much different then teasing someone who has cancer, a child with ADD or any other disease or health concern. Sure, it isn't life-threatening...but anyone's adverse health condition isn't something to laugh at.
