Well that's the wrong answer. If you do it the plane will roll and take off. If you believe that when it does it has violated the wording of the question, then the answer is the question doesn’t allow an answer. The answer is never that the plane won't take off......

The question does allow an answer.

The pilot is part of the test, he must ensure the questions limits are maintained. He is a monitor/control system which has the wheel and conveyor speed as its inputs and throttle position as its output. All the pilot has to do is maintain an equal wheel and conveyor speed using the throttle and then see if the plane takes off - it won't because he won't be able to apply any throttle whilst maintaining the bounds of the question.

QED - Hence its the right answer

The orgininal questions conflicts with your answer on 2 point. First, it doesn't say there is a pilot. Second it says the converyer matches the wheel speed not the other way around.

"The plane will not fly" is the only completely wrong choice. F

If there is no pilot then the plane can't move - hence it doesn't take off. A to you for pointing that fact out, A+ to me for getting it right in the first place :)...

The question does state the conveyors speed must match the wheel speed - the only mechanism which can maintain this state is the propulsion system on the plane (or lack of). I only introduced the concept of a pilot to try to simplify my description, sorry.

"For the plane to take off we must presume it has a propulsion system as without one it cant take off. If a force is applied to the plane external to the conveyor/wheel system then the speed of the conveyor will no longer match the speed of the wheels. Hence an external force cannot be applied to stay within the bounds of the question and without any thrust the plane won't takeoff."

    Is that clearer?

No its the pilots job to see if the plane can fly whilst staying within the bounds of the question. I doubt he would bother climbing aboard though given that the answer is obvious.

Whatever the airplane does, I agree with this! Mythbusters is good in that it brings more method to some of these myths than is typical for a bar or internet discussion, but there are a lot of gaps that leaves them far short of "rigorous".

Plane doesn't fly IMO, no air moving over wing = no lift= on ground.

True, the aircraft is essentially remaining stationary.

Now, on to a more perplexing question.....were the suicides of Eva Braun and Adolph Hitler faked, and have they been living in Argentina for the past 4 decades?

It is very possible that they were faked and AH and EB were able to escape somewhere while the US Government fed its citizens some BS story.
