good to know about the video ram utilization, i had not taken that into consideration. my motherboard is maxed at 8 gigs of ram, but xp 64 supports up to 16 gigs of ram! http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457053.aspx if i do run twin video cards, say 2 8800GT 512's, i wonder if they will have a limiting effect on the utilization of the ram. back on topic, i dont think Vista is bad for everyone, but it depends on what you need the pc to do. i am heavy into 3d design, and games, so AMD and xp 64 was the way to for me. your mileage may vary !
seems to me Vista (and XP) are amazingly inefficient with RAM, still wanting to swap most everything to the HDD, leaving Gigs of RAM empty.
Yeah. Win2000 was great with ram. Too bad they didn't model XP and Vista after that Oh well. Wifey just got a laptop with Vista (Toshiba) and it seems to work fine so far. 2GB ram with an Intel dualcore. I'm gonna load pshop on it to see how it handles that. For what she's doing it's a smokin machine though
Just recieved my new Dell Friday and I opted for XP, demo'd vista on a laptop and i was'nt impressed...Stick with what works imo
No, it isn't (see my "Vista Hell" thread). Mine crashes several times per week, including crashes of the Windows Explorer program. Mine has about 5 glitches for which there are no clear patches (can't rename folders, keeps rebooting itself in an endless loop, networking functions crash, the mail client died and won't open), and the third party developers are hosed too. My Adobe Reader doesn't work anymore, Trend Micro antivirus can't update and tries to update itself every 15 mins, the expensive law practice software won't network right between systems, etc.
Vista is fine, on proper hardware. Buy from the Dell Small Business line to avoid the pre-loaded consumer stuff. My parents bought a Vostro laptop last year, NO problems to date. If they can figure it out and run it without crashing, you can too. Also bought a Vostro desktop and XPS 1330 for the shop, both running Vista, no problems. Just bought an Acer desktop for my in-laws, so far, no problems and they love it. My desktop at home, no problems. Again, proper hardware and avoiding loads of pre-loaded sofware is the key.
