Sam has done it again, he is running off a batch of the fuel pump blocks for our BBi's. He plans to do one small run only so anyone needing/wanting one should contact him NOW. He just sent me an email because I sent him my melted one last fall, there are no mods even the original screw will work as well as the factory cover. Its a 5 minute install and will save a break-down like I had happen to me.

    Thanks Sam!

    Yes - I'll take one.

PS: Are any of the other fuse block sets (left & right) still available too?

    Good day all,

Thanks to Paul for starting this thread!

I have (finally) completed the design of the BBi's little fuse block as I discussed in my original BB fuse block thread a month or so ago. The design is quite similar in that it has both a printed circuit board and a CNC machined base (so there are actually two designs that I did :) ). As before, the block looks OEM in that it maintains the use of the OEM fuse cover except that it uses the modern blade style fuses. Although it may sound trivial (but it wasn't given the spacings I needed), I was also able to accommodate the original mounting screw and so no mods are necessary for the installation... Just remove your old one, install my new one, add some new blade style fuses and you are done.

I sent off the PCB to my board house and so I should have boards in a few weeks. I will be meeting with my machinist this week so he can program up the CNC to make the bases. I am planning to have the blocks ready to go by the End of April or the first week of May. If I wasn't traveling so much in April (Asia and US), I could ship them sooner...

Pricing has not yet been determined, as I do not have all of my costs in (the blocks are still being made). I am just charging my out of pocket costs on these (PCB fabrication costs, CNC setup and milling, parts purchased, etc) and so given the limited number required, the price will be approximately $100 each + shipping. Since the run is so small, the assembly will be done by hand (by me) in order to further reduce the costs (no setup for automated assembly). I will post pics of the blocks once I have the first one made.

As for numbers, I already have commitments from those who already purchased my white/black blocks (for their BBi's) and so this is the number I will be doing on this run plus a couple of extra. Once I run out of these blocks I will most likely not make any more, as my work commitments are quite high these days (70+ hours per week). So, if there are anyone else who has not contacted me (either recently or through my thread last month) please do so within the next few days.

    Cheers,

    Sam

    Hi Sam,
I believe you already have me down as a yes, but taking another opportunity to offer my thanks again. Can't wait to get it!

Off topic but Jim Selevan's post reminded me that his Renault Alpine (very cool car) had a prominent showing in the Car Crazy episode featuring Cars & Coffee in Irvine, as did our local congressman John Campbell (also an FChatter) in one of his Ferraris! Try link below to view.

Back on topic, thanks again Sam!

    Good day All,

I received the printed circuit boards (PCBs) yesterday and I have populated one of them for your viewing pleasure. Next to it is an unassembled one so you can see the bare PCB... and the fact that I have the boards gold plated (look at the exposed areas of the PCB). Although gold plating is more $$$, there are a variety of reasons for doing this... reduced oxidation and more importantly the minimization of "solder whisker" phenomena that occurs with the use of the (now) standard lead-free solder. I will still be using lead solder (for North America), but wanted the boards done in a lead-free process in case anyone in Europe wants them (all electronics except medical and military devices, must use lead-free solder... RoHS directive).

The base still needs a little bit of refining before it goes off to the CNC shop. I have to make some dimension changes, as I want the cover to sit better... Since I am leaving overseas on Monday, I suspect that I will not have time to make the changes until I get back. However, I did speak to my machinist and there should be no problems getting them done asap.

I have also attached some pics of Paul's melted BBi block as comparison. Note the heat discoloration of the fuse clips, fuse, and the cover. In fact, the loose clips where actually separated from the block and melted themselves into the fuse cover. This is just a warning to all BBi owners to inspect, repair, or replace these little fuse blocks, as they can fail quite horribly.

Take care all and I will post more pics when return!

    Cheers,

    Sam

    Good day All,

I finally returned from my work travels and wrapped up a bunch of the usual odds and ends when one is away... Consequently, I met up with my machinist today and so he is now converting my CAD drawings to his software and then he will be programming up the CNC. I changed my original prototype base to accommodate some funky "issues" with the original bases and so I am confident that all is in order. Once the first one is made, I will check all of the clearances, etc before I give the complete go ahead... So, now, I need to have an accurate number of who all is committed to the blocks. Currently, I have the following on my list:

    newman
    angelo
    markpeboxer
    pinnin512
    jselevan
    wlanast
    mlflotus
    zarathustra
    garyreed
    willrace
    turk512
    ... and maybe one more

Total of 12... however, I will make a few extra just in case. Pricing will be pretty close to my estimate of $100 or so plus shipping.

If you are not on the list and want one of these little BBi fuse blocks, you best be letting me know within the next day or so. I am hoping to get the bases done within the next week and ship the next... as my work schedule is really getting nasty (at last count I have 11 work projects on the go.. with two of them going into production in the next 6-8 weeks...)

    Cheers,

    Sam

    Good day All,

Well, it has been a few days and I have a total of 12 orders for the little blocks and so, this is the number I will be making. I will probably make 15 to have a few extra just in case. As I stated earlier, once these are gone no more will be made.

I will post complete pics once the first one is complete.

    Cheers,

    Sam

    Good day William,

    You are very welcome!

The CNC program is ready to go. My machinist is planning on running the bases this weekend. I am planning on being there for the first one so that I can verify all the measurements, etc. If all looks good then the remainder will be done... I am crossing my fingers...

    Cheers,

Today I installed the left and right side fuse blocks that I recently bought from Sam.

They work great!! The old right side fuse block was starting to melt down when the hot wire goes in for the three radiators fans, so I'm glad to get rid of them and the old ceramic fuses.

Here's some before and after shots.

Thanks Sam!!! I'm looking foward to installing the new fuel pump fuse block next.

    Good day Mario,

Indeed I do have a few sets left (the big white and black blocks) and I will put you on the list for the mini fuse pump block as well (still waiting on my machinist).

    Good day Everyone,

I have been waiting on my machinist to complete the bases for the mini-fuse block... I was promised that he would get on these ASAP, but sadly this was not the case (he had taken ill, thankfully not seriously)... He has all the CNC programming done and so he just needs to do it. I spoke with him the other day and he is planning on running the blocks this weekend. I will post as soon as I have pics!

My apologies for the delay and/or inconvenience!

    Cheers,

    Sam
