Hi all. Hopeing i can get some advice. I have a 98 355 F1, and recently i have had s couple of occasions when while driving, maybe an hour after starting off, and things are warm, first the speedo stopped working, and 5 -10 minutes later the gearbox warning light come on. After pulling over, i couldnt get beyond second gear. After waiting maybe 15 minutes, i started on my way again, but driving really easy. I carried on for maybe 30 minutes , able to use all gears, and made it home. But going up through the gears, changing at minimum revs. This has happened a few times now, and when the dealer had it back in Feb, told me it was sorted. A new fuse to one of the cooling fans !!!! I have checked them and none are blown. Any help please, so i can at least give the dealer, Graypaul, a head start !!

Welcome - two suggestions one daft one less so - I'm sure there's a thread here about weakening batteries causing similar issues - and the other is find another service house - possibly even non-franchise - to help sort it

I had the same problem on my previous car, an 02 360 F1, after I had to jump start it once. It would only shift between first and second and I had no speedo. After calling my mechanic he had me check the ABS fuse and bingo, that was it. Maybe you have something loose or intermittent in that circuit (vehicle speed sensor). He told me apparently that the F1 trans goes into this "1-2" mode when it looses the speed sensor signal. Makes sense since otherwise people could just pull the ABS fuse and drive their car without the speedo/odo running and adding milage.
    Good luck.

P.S. Makes me wonder if you pull the ABS fuse an a 6-Speed car what would happen. Would you still be able to drive it with the speedo/odo disabled? Hmmm.

Here's a really easy way to by-pass only having 1st and 2nd gear. Get up to about 50mph in 2nd gear, going into neutral and downshift and it'll autoselect 6th. From there you can downshift into 5-4-3 but won't let you upshift. I drove my 355 like this for about 2k miles because I kept blowing a fuse, my issue ended up being the cable from the fusebox to the battery was loose, tightened it and never happened again. Spent countless hours diagnosing this issue.

Had the same problem when the Speedo signal wire shorted on me. I had to wind the car out in 2nd, pull both paddles for Neutral and then Upshift--Automatically goes into 6th gear at anything above 40mph or so....
