How many of you and how often have you red lined your car and have the rev limiter cut in cancelling power? Also what effect can this have on the car............(obviously not done on purpose)
This does no damage, the rev counters a safety feature to stop prolonged high revving. The engine can in fact rev higher but the limiter stops it @ 8.500RPM.
I know some people will say its made for it but I agree with Robbie never is my answer as well. I usually change gears no later than 6500-7000 and thats if I am running it out. I am just not comfortable hitting the rev limit with the only F-Car I can afford!!!!
Guys, after a warm up period, these cars are design to operate at high revs. It's not going to hurt your engine to bounce off the rev limiter. Actually, it's good for your cars engine. It's gets a lot of the carbon build up and junk, out of your engine. Have you ever heard of the italian tune up???
I've never hit the limiter, but do shift at or about 8000 rpms at least 1 time every time I'm out for a drive... Normal in 1st or 2nd, 3rd if I'm on an open road with no one around..
I have only hit it once since I have owned mine. Of course, it was after one too many scotches and I was feeling a little aggressive. Nice to hear there shouldn't be any problems as a result though...
Roughly 3-4 times a day. (sometimes more, depends on traffic, I only drive aggressive when there is no traffic or it's EXTREMELY light) It's generally when I am sideways though "drifting/powersliding/etc" Signed, The guy that daily drives his F355 with no maintenance but oil changes.
Pulling on freeway on ramps in no traffic...frequently Around town............never On track...........occasionally, usually shift at a little over 7500 Spirited back country driving..........never Logic ain't my long suit
I'm in the "any rpm at or below the limiter once the conditions are right" camp. Oil warmed up, gearbox warmed up, road/track conditions permitting, my F355 earns its (rigorous) maintenance regime, and the spot in the garage.
I've hit the rev limiter more times that I can remember. These cars are designed to be run afterall. When I had my NSX I rev'd it to 8200 rpm and it always felt smoother for it. Sames goes for the vette, only there the limit was more like 5800 rpm. Whats the point of driving a Ferrari if you drive it like a econo car?
The actual 'limiter' comes in at 8750rpm.................... so 8500rpm is good to do when necessary.............. .
You may not believe this, but the car/engine is actually designed to run to red line. But hey, it's your car, and you can drive as best suits you. So ignore the rest of us.
Mine's an F1. Not only have I redlined the car a time or two, I can say from experience that rather than simply cutting the power, the car will shift for you to the next gear up (though not in "sport" mode, so the manual says). Maybe that's what people mean when they refer to the F1 being an "automatic". Anyway, I don't think using the entire rev range is harmful to the car, but you definitely gotta have confidence in your timing belt maintanence being up to date! John
There is a 456 in at our local F-car service centre that is having a head removed due to carbon build up on a valve seat! They used a scope to look inside and the valve is not fully seating, they tried the Italian tune up, but no luck, service tech said it was due to the owner being shy with the throttle. Not a cheap lesson. Drive it!
....and everytime you hit the redline, it is necessary..... +1 ........... Wether we are in the drivers seat (w/ car engine running) or on the couch (w/ car in the garage)..... time will pass......... and both us and our cars..... will age......
