not a very big or fancy one, but my great grandfather who i got to know (he lived til he was 98, he passed when i was around 10) used to own one of the biggest millineries in the country, and had one of the biggest estates in town, other than that, we're working on making a larger family tree, but i'm unaware of a whole lot of other "interesting" things we've done.

Direct descendent of the 5th president, James Monroe.

Grandpa on my father's side served in WWII in communications. He was always ahead of the rest of the army, alone, spotting and setting up communication equipment. He said that most of his service was spent only several hundred feet away from the German lines. One night, a couple of Nazi Generals were out taking a walk away from their troops discussing plans and he overheard this and reported it back to the American lines. This information apparently gave a huge advantage and saved lives of many American troops. He was awarded a medal for it of some sort. He was also one of the first troops to infiltrate Adolf Hitler's Eagle's Nest and the Obersalzberg complex.

The perhaps neatest person I am related to however, is the grandfather on my mother's side. He played for the New York Yankees during the 1958 and 1959 seasons and pitched in the 1958 World Series. It was game 2 and they won. He played with Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, the whole gang. I had had the priveledge of meeting Mickey Mantle several times in my life and he always had a great deal of respect and admiration for my grandfather because he was a man's man on and off the field. He is still alive and in great shape and health for his age. He is a bit of a local celebrity in the small city he resides in and when we are out it is great to hear people come up to him and ask him questions and give him small talk. He apparently could have gone pro in either baseball or basketball but chose baseball. He was just a great athlete and amazing man.

As you can tell I'm very proud of my heritage. Unfortunately the buck stops with me :)

My great great grandfather supposedly invented Crepe paper. And a distant relative on my mom's side was a famous (in his day) bank robber in the midwest.

Now Dad was a go-getter,a dynamo but like alot of bears that go fast don't go fast long.
Maybe this letter from another getter-bear,to Dad's business partner, sums it up in very few words.
    Admirably.
    cheers,

My grandfather told my mom that her aunt was Aunt Jemima, and she told all of her friends at school.

On a serious note though, I do believe my great-great grandfather invented pinball machines and slot cars, or at least that's what I've heard.

    Cool thread.

~5 generations back cousins with Louis Riel, Canadian rebel and politician.

Louis Riel (22 October 1844 – 16 November 1885) was a Canadian politician, a founder of the province of Manitoba, and leader of the Métis people of the Canadian prairies.[1] He led two resistance movements against the Canadian government and its first post-Confederation Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald. Riel sought to preserve Métis rights and culture as their homelands in the Northwest came progressively under the Canadian sphere of influence. He is regarded by many as a Canadian folk hero today...

And do you mean Darby Dan Farms? John Kenneth Galbraith? If so, I don't know Mr. Galbraith personally but have met him. Have been to Darby Dan many times.

once when i was quite young, the family was sitting on the front porch, as was the fashion, on a cool summer evening. my grandfather, who raised prize winning peonys, noticed a neighbors cat digging in the flower bed. he quitely slipped off his shoe and tossed it at the cat. the shoe landed on the cats head and it ran off with the shoe still on his head. that's pretty much the best thing my family has ever done. i've been able to go back 4 generations on both sides too.

    - My father's cousin flew a fighter plane in WWII. Once came back from a mission with over 30 bullet holes in his plane.
    - Soon-to-be Fiance's family founded a now upscale town in the East Bay Area of Northern California. Their family names grace several city street names.
    - I ate pizza with Joe DiMaggio at a REAL Italian restaurant in the east bay...where Joe was from. This was less than 2 years before he passsed away.

    Some random occurences:

    - Great Great Grandmother on my mother's side worked at the mortuary dressing the dead at 11 years old.
    - Somewhere on my mother's side of the family (of her father's) got involved in a land dispute, killed someone, then proceeded to change his name and join another family thus making it virtually impossible to get additional family records/history. To this day my mother's maiden name is still a mystery.
    - My father's uncle use to be a sound engineer for Bill Graham Presents and Day on the Green shows

I love the cat story! My wife brags on her Grandfather's throwing abilities too, but it's dirt clods at birds. She also is related to Bill Monroe (distant family cousin) and General George Rogers Clark, which I think is pretty cool. She is real into his career and the expedition, which we plan to re-trace someday.
