The laquer (?) on my gear shift stalk has worn away, causing a metal-on-metal grinding kind of noise everytime I shift and it rubs against the gate (on the sides).

Any fixes save replacing it? Any kind of material I can "brush" on or the like?

Don't know of a "cosmetic" repair, but IME one does need to periodically lubricate the inside edges of the gate with a thin grease film.

I have the same problem. Hopefully someone can give us a suggestion. Now that it has happened, I am applying a grease film to the gate.

I too, Alberto. I will talk to my mechanic tomorrow.

You didn't mention what kind of car, but on a 308, a lot of metal-to-metal gate contact can be reduced by adjusting the shift linkage. Mine doesn't contact the gate at all (anymore!) on 2-3 shifts, and doesn't touch the 'fingers' going 1-2 or 3-4. Took some fiddling to get it this way.
