hmmm... I guess I would say "let he who is without sin cast the first stone..."

We've all, ok maybe not ALL, but most of us have, at one time or another, gone too fast, driven after too many drinks, run a stop light or sign, or SOMETHING... it seems to me that he, most likely, went that fast probably when he 'knew' it was safest ... i.e. no upcoming intersections, no blind corners, etc...

It's all relative. I don't know about british high ways construction standard, but on Autobahn 186 could be done if the traffic was very low at the entire stretch.

186 is stupid fast, yes, but we don't know the whole story.

We don't know if he's lying either. 186 equals 299.24 km. per hour, aka 300 km. per hour and he might just have said it to give the audience a nice round number - several people do that to brag.
Perhaps he just topped it and braked down. And we all know the best car in the world to attempt a thing like that in (Veyron) - you'd get up to that speed in no time and down again in no time (and I guess the rush would be priceless!).

I feel sorry for the father of the victim mentioned in the article, but really don't know anything about the road conditions, sight, level of traffic, weather conditions, road type and so on.

What are they gonna do... Arrest him? Unless they have proof...

In Jeremy Clarksons cases I enjoy playing devils advocate. But a lot of youngsters look up to him and it might be a wrong signal to them. "It's okey to do so once in a while."

I admit though, I would do stupid things if I held keys to a Veyron, no denying that.

Addicted to speed, it's a disease!

When humans have power, they seek to use it... And that fits nothing better than us addictives.

Top Gear appears to be the next target on the hit list, for those who are determined to take "get a life" off the options.

It would seem that the movement to keep people from living their own lives, to have people just sit around in padded rooms waiting to be told who to give their money to, has reached england. And taken root.

The Beeb news has gotten to be a joke. Or it would be, if the legislators wouldn't take it seriously.

If Benny Hill was deemed contrary to the public good (a good laugh is obviously bad), then you can be sure that Top Gear will be under attack.

Apparently, the public going stupid isn't just a US phenomenon.

Notice the comments on the article, though: cars are safer, but the speed limits keep getting lower.

I know that section of road very well, it is a 40mph section and even in a veyron I would say it is not even remotely possible without ending in a fireball of aluminium and carbon fibre.

There was a guy in Germany with a Mac F1 who made it a sports to touch 300 km/h every day. He got a call from McLaren when they read out the car from distance because they thought something was wrong.

On the section of road Jeremy claimed to do 186 -(( Limehouse Link between central London and Docklands)) it would be impossible to reach that speed even in a Veyron.

Talk about sensationalism -- making a news story out of a car accident from 2004 because of a comment made by a TV presenter in 2008. WTF?!?

I'd like to know what unsafe things the people who point fingers have one in their lives. I'm sure this has something to do with enviro issues as well.

i dont know why the father of the killed boy is getting mad a clarkson...he is saying that he is discouraging speeding and that clarkson speeding relates to the fatal accident in 2004? people speed...its just a fact of life and ya 186 is beyond but thats not saying he even did that. Its just not fair for him to blame someone else for an accident other than the drive who caused it. My opinion is just looking for his 15 mins trying to get simpathy for his lost in the past. whatever makes him feel better...

    Sad, but true.

    I concur.

Getting mad at Clarkson is worth more publicity than getting mad at whomever was involved with the unrelated 2004 accident.

Still a dumb move by JC.

186 is a bit excessive, stopping from that speed would require several hundred if not thousand feet. Then again, there are people on Gumball who have done well over 200mph on public roads.

The Veyron accelerates so quickly to 300 kph that it would only need a short section of road, perhaps 1 km, to go that fast.

Actually, he would occasionally mention to friends that he was hitting 200mph daily on the way to work. The factory heard of this, and didn't believe the claims. But the next time the car was in for service, they checked the computers and it was true!

Maybe a future segment on Top Gear will be to see if it's actually possible to hit 300kph in a Veyron on the Limehouse Link :)

it seems a bit silly that there is even a thread about this-Now I will explain-Clarkson, after all of these years and all the cars he has logged drive time in, is most likely a better driver than most of us. If he felt he was in a situation where he could safely navigate what ever car to that MPH, then I say good job mate.

I'm pretty sure UK measures in miles as well, not KM/h, based on all the Top Gear episodes I've seen.

The speedometer on the particular Veyron he was in may have been in km/h. Touching "300" would then be 186 mph, translated to his fellow UK folk.

I'm sure he is responsible enough that it was not in a city main with cars all around, but rather in the country. Hey move on a get a life.
