Someone with a 5 series took up 2 spots in a parking garage yesterday in Long Branch, NJ. A really nice area, where I wouldn't worry too highly about someone else scratching my car. Bentleys and Ferraris are a common sight in the area. Well first thing, I wanted to print out one of those tickets when I saw it. I felt a lot better though later that day when I returned to the garage and saw a big (hopefully expensive) ticket for him/her.

I never take up two spots. In NY it's hard enough to get a spot at all, take up two? You're asking for trouble, plus it pisses me off when people do it so I don't do it to others either. In the end what can you do? Park far away or try to get in as in the middle of the spot as you can. Having a ding here and there is a part of owning a car.

I work for what I have too, very very hard in fact. So do not get mad that since you take up everyone else's space, that we park as close to you as we can. If truly that is your feeling, then you will not mind if you need a can opener to get in to your right or left hand side.

Disrespect goes all the way around, bro.

The only time I parked in 2 spots was in high school. I had a new navigator and I didn't want some stupid kid hitting my car. Lucky for me though I was the stupid kid that inflicted the most damage to that poor car. For anyone with kids, a lincoln navigator is a horrible first car. Its safe, but way way too big. Get em a BMW, they wont hit nearly as much stuff.

Yesterday I saw a black LP640 double parked at a mall. I totally understand doing so as it is a known fact that the population is getting fatter and parking spaces are getting smaller. That said, double parking can increase the chance damage from poor, low I.Q. losers who resent a nice automobile.

That's horrible. Guy wasn't even double parked.

I don't double park, but if I'm in the Accord and someone else does, I'll slide right in there... inch(es) away from them.
...sorry, only spot available at the time! I also make sure when I do that to take a picture of my car parked correctly in a spot, right next to theirs.

...this is all assuming that the car isn't worth a thing (ie. Big trucks do it all the time up here). If it's anything worth anything, then I leave room, always.

So today at the mall I park the E55 to grab some lunch. I park cleanly between my lines in a fullsize spot..not a compact spot.

I come back out an hour later and there is a brand new BMW 5 series parked next to me. He is so far over into my spot that I cannot even get in to open my door so I have to climb in through the passenger side.

It took every ounce of self control to not key the fark out of this car.

What I'm saying is that if you're so cavalier with your own property that you don't care if complete strangers cause damage to it(through stupidity/carelessness/disregard) then loaning the car to a complete stranger shouldn't be a 'stretch' for you. We're not talking about the behavior of friends/acquaintances - they know YOU, thus, they know better than to assume they'll skate responsibility for damaging your car through anonymity.

At least in the town where I live, car parking spaces have gotten a lot narrower in the past 10 years or so.

Property developers are forced to provide a certain number of car spaces for the size of a given building, and by making the spaces as
narrow as possible, they maximise the number of "bays" and the size of the deveolpment that is allowed.
The inevitable result is that cars often suffer damage when doors are opened in to them by stupid and incosiderate people.
Most cars have rubber mouldings on the doors to protect from such damge, but Ferrari's and other exotics do not.
Consequently I have no guilt about double parking in those sort of places. The other reason for double parking is getting out of the Ferrari, the doors are longer than many cars, requiring a wider bay.

I've never had anyone give me grief about it.

I never do this.. instead i try to park next to a corner so that 50% chances of vandalism are diminished. I DO park away from a curb so that the nose of the car is 12-14 inches away from the walk path or parking curb - i find that is more effective than using 2 spots. When you park a few inches back people can notice your car before the even decide to park in the spot, and in turn, consciously try to park within fair distance, in their own lines. Drivers who park right upon the curb of a spot tend to have careless drivers park next to them.

I tested it a week ago (with the GT2) the times i parked as i do (away from the curb) is when i found either nobody next to me, or a proper park job on both sides of me. When i parked upon the curb (did this 3 times) 2 out of the 3 times did someone park unevenly close to the car.. Such cars are too low to the ground to park too close to the curb anyway

I would never park in to spaces. I just try to find spots that are either far away from everyone or on the end so only one person can park next to me.

I was once at a mall in California called Santana Row...there was no parking at all...I see then see this purple Diablo taking up two spots so I got the attention of one of the security guards and pointed out this blatant infringement on the rules of decent society...and they towed it

...sorry to anyone here if that was your car but if you are arrogant enough to take up two spots with one car in a crowded place then you got what you deserved.

If you are really worried about door dings just drive a car you do not care that much about…you wont see my Ferrari at the shopping mall a week before Christmas…but some people do it and I salute them for that…

+1 I don't see how hard that is.

Its funny how the original picture is of a BMW and the only fchatter on this thread insisting that he is justified to double park drives a....BMW. Its no wonder the general consensus out there is that BMW drivers are jerks (or what Jeremy Clarkson would call them; cocks). Obviously there are very nice BMW drivers, but with these people around, its hard to not label the brand negatively IMO.

I think this is only in America for the most part. When we had an '06 M3cs, it was my wife's daily driver, but I would sometimes use it for fun - in anycase, when I drove it around the DC area I would drive moderately fast since I am used to driving in Europe primarily. I would always be followed by G35, VW R32 and other BMWs (330s, other M3s, M5s.) Each driver of each type of these cars have ego problems when they see another BMW, and its as if it is a competition when you are just trying to get from A to B. A similar experience would happened when I would drive my 996, only it would be BMWs alone trying to keep up or "prove" themselves. . . They are all simplistic young (younger than 30) drivers/people, who get intriged when they find a good, or better driver in a respectable sports car amongst them. I have seen it many times, these guys... parking e46 m3s yards away from the building, AND taking two spots, just because he has AC schintzer wheels and a borla exhaust... When all they do is bully other drivers on the road...
Ofcourse some (alot) are nice people, but I know the group you are refering to... The ones who love to drag race, and who respect their car more than they respect themselves.

never want to use two spaces: i'd would be keyed.

BUT I have never understood motorcycles who share a lane in moving traffic only to find the same Ninja warrior taking up a full space because he doesn't want anyone too close when standing still.

Right now, two spaces in our parking lot taken by two motorcycles: why couldn't they share?

I've never had a situation where it was truly impossible to get a decent spot.

You can park on an end row to prevent people parking across from you and dinging up your front bumper while they pull in.

You can park next to handicap spots, planters, the mulched areas at the end of the row, carriage ruturn thingies and next to a wall to ensure nobody is on one side. Also, if you park on the RIGHT of another car, chances are the car will have a driver only - no passenger, which means they won't even be opening the door on the side facing your car.

You can park far away from the rest of the cars - nobody else is going to want to make that walk and if they do they will likely at least be careful to not ding your car.

You can scout out the lot and find a nice condition car that someone cares about, and park with them on your right hand side (driver likely to be careful opening the door).

You have all of these tools available to you and all of these things do not infringe upon your fellow drivers. Taking up 2 spaces says "screw all of you! My car is more worthy and important and I don't need to park far away, I'll just take your spots".

It's not a good way of protecting your car because it invites problems, plus it can get you towed.

As for the original pic and letter, I would imagine he wrote a note (partly in jest but also to make a point) but never really dinged the guys car - which is why he did the "when you find the scratches" (to get the guy searching his car all over for them). IMO it's a funny response to an ****** parking dipsh!t.
