The grill looks like it was painted flat black. Is that the normal finish (flat) for the lower part of the 328?

Well, my grille wasn't painted back, but I did just have it restored for the repaint my car is undergoing.

I first had the anodizing stripped off, then had the grilled disassembled, polished out and all the rock dents fixed, then reassembled, then reanodized in the matte silver finish.

Are you planning to reanodize yours? If not, how do you plan to do it?

Oh, no need for you to disassemble the grille for anodizing unless there’s some damage to it like mine was. It should just dip in for the strip, then in another vat for the fresh anodizing.

Well, I tried stripping the paint of the grill by sanding it down. Not a great idea. Even though the paint came off, it was very difficult to remove the scratches from the aluminum. I ended up taking it to a friend of mine's body shop. He shipped it out to some metal expert that works on parts for bikes and racecars. Should turn out pretty nice. Kind of depressing because I spent 6 hours stripping off the paint and couldn't handle the job myself. I told him to match the color and shine to the horse emblem in the front (which wasn't polished to a shine in my case). I hope that is the right color. If not, I'll just plunk 500 on an aftermarket replica. Stinks not to driving my car right now.

Max, did you use MEK?.. If so sanding should not have been necessary?.. Details?

I'm back. I've been slacking a little with the posting. I got the grill back from the body shop and it looked horrible. They polished to a semi chrome shine. I decided to have them paint it black again so that I could drive the car. My plan is to find an original or a replica to replace it with. The black color is sort of growing on me anyways. Thanks for everyones help.

Call Italian Recycling. They have two 328's that they're parting out. They may have the grille.

Thanks. I'll give them a try. Just found out that I have a $4,400 bill to pay at the Ferrari dealership for liquids and some repairs. Might have to hold on the grill.

All in all, the black grill does not look bad. The 438's and 355's grills are black and look good. If you are not really hung up on originality then keep it black and enjoy the drive. You can always take your time and find and aluminum one as a replacement.

I just got some stuff from them as well. Probably the same car. On the invoice, the parts car is listed as "1986 328 VIN# 73061". If anyone keeps track of VIN#'s ect, then scratch that one off the active list.
When I got my car is was missing the air injection system for the exhaust/cat converter. Car runs great and since there is no vehicle inspection in Florida, I don't need it, but wanted to put the system on (blanked off) so the engine compartment would be 100% correct for the shows. Right now my car is at 97 points. They gave me a good price (not a steal) of 40% of the new price, since it's only for show I didn't want to spend full price, a little cleaning up and it looks good enough.

LOL! Same thing with me, except mine was missing the rear set of exhaust gas analyzer pipes. That's one of the thing I bought from them.

That doesn't sound like an '86 VIN. My April '87 is #71403.

I emailed them through their website and Doug emailed me back with the price. I got it for $400 + 25 to ship. As soon as I get it on I'll take pics with the black grill and then with the aluminum in the same setting. Then we'll have a poll on which looks better. But, I'm still going to keep the aluminum on in honor of Enzo. Ciao.

The deed has been done. I much prefer the aluminum grill. After months of persistance it feels great to have accomplished this. Thanks for everyones help and advice.

    Max, congrats!

As an aside, your turn/driving light lenses have become very expensive and hard to find, I'd recommend covering them with the vinyl protection offered by Griot's Garage and others to prevent a shattered lens from gravel hitting them down low...

Did you ever figure out if your painted grill could be brought back to original finish?

Vast improvement, IMO. Pininfarina knew what they were doing. ;)
