That is a ringnut, and opens with a 28mm Hill Engineering ringnut tool: http://www.ricambiamerica.com/product_info.php?products_id=262610 (Here come the folks with grinders and welders to make one for $0.22/cents )
Agreed, but thank heaven for cheap tools you can cut/grind/weld into whatever shape you want! A tool like that should be stocked by your local Ferrari club. Correct me if I am wrong, but you only need it for engine outs, right?
I'm facing the same thing now Lars.... I found that a 3/4" impact socket is the right diameter, and should be thick enough to have plenty metal in the slots. So I'm going to grind one myself also... may drill out the center a bit too. Let us know what you end up doing Image Unavailable, Please Login
$0.22! Heck, that's way too much. A BFH (I recommend the 4 lb Harbor Freight variety) and a cold chisel will get it off just fine. To retorque, use about a half swing with the BFH against the chisel held at a 30-35 deg. angle, right in the notch that's still good after the removal. Reassemble. Sell car.
Oh ye of little faith. The correct part is sold by Ricambi...for $17. Just buy a new ringnut. Now, take a disposable old socket about .75" and fill it with some JB Weld. Place over the ringnut and allow it to sit until hard. Now remove as you would with any socket/nut, except now your old ringnut and old .75" socket are trashcan bound. No grinding required. No ear-shattering noises from Bruce's BigFnHammer. And you get to support our sponsor Ricambi by purchasing the new ringnut through them. Hey, you just saved yourself from buying a $100 tool, too. Easy-peasy. Oh, you want to get the correct torque onto it when re-installing?! Go buy the tool, Stooges!
