    Thank you for that.

Not so sure....I seem to recall seeing the 512 replica article in Prancing Horse while that tail was still at Pozzi...but I could be wrong as I was in the US and only visited Pozzi once a year, if that.

Still the yellow ecurie Francorchamps 512S long tail has always been one of my favorites, there is a special allure to a configuration used just once: fleeting moments of history!

    Timewise it is possible:

    From Cavallino nr. 72 dec. 1992 / jan. 1993:

"...although the Francorchamps team car's yellow long tail recently vanished with unknown destination from its decorative role on a wall in Ferrari France's workshops..."

From Prancing Horse nr. 117 fourth quarter 1995:

"...In the summer of 1988, I became involved in a project to reconstruct two Ferrari 512 sports racing cars - one a 512S and the other a 512M..." and "...I started a series of articles for Prancing Horse..." and "...After 16 installments in Prancing Horse and seven years of reconstruction, I'm pleased to report the yellow car, the 512S, is finished! Completed in July 1995..."

Although it is possible (timewise) it doesn't automatically mean that the tail you mention did find it's way to this yellow longtail...

    Best wishes,

    Stephan

Thank you for the link, yes I had seen that. I must be getting old I did not realize it was that long since that tail had vanished from Pozzi and did not remember having written that!

Well... I now definitely know where it didn't go:

I re-read the "Reconstructing two 512's" articles in Prancing Horse magazine:

Prancing Horse nr. 100: "Our 512S longtail from the left rear." and "This is an original tail that came to us as part of the Muller parts inventory." (There is a small photo of the 512S long tail rear body section that goes with the text).

    Kind regards,

    Stephan

Muller did well buying all those cars from Solar productions, no doubt the biggest check McQueen got for his troubles!

By the way have you read "A French kiss with death" By Michael Keyser? One of the most enjoyable car books I have ever read: your view of Steve McQueen may come out slightly...changed but it is full of anecdotes such as when one of the mechanics in charge of the cars, a little French mustachioed chappie nicknamed Asterix decided he would impress his date by...taking a 512S longtail as transportation for the evening!
Some time that evening the head honchos of the film got a phone call: it was les gendarmes asking if it was normal for the car to be parked in front of a restaurant, which it most definitely was not and Asterix got the scolding of his life:)!

    Hah: 1040!

Brings back a moment in time: summer 1987, I was in Zolder for a race weekend, on track in my Formula Ford. Peter Heuberger of Chateau d'Oex Switzerland was there with his Sunoco 512, there was open testing before actual pratice with everybody on track together. he blew by me at the end of the straight into the chicane, at the back of the paddock and then of course braked a mile before me (muuuuch heavier car) and I suddenly thought I would end up between the gearbox and the bodywork of the 512:) I must say the sound was of stereo quality though!

Here are 3 pictures showing the 512 of Scuderia Filipinetti. Got them from a former mechanic of Scuderia Filipinetti. Maybe they´re interesting for you.....

Here´s a picture showing a 512 on modifying the body length.

Here at race, he told me it was in Zandvoort

Is that in the Fred Simeone collection? I saw that car 2 years ago at Radnor. He just opened a racing car museum in Philadelphia that has some nice cars in it.

What a great read this thread is. Thanks for sharing your experiences, Mr Noon. The pictures with your son are fantastic!

    congrats

The movie was based on filming of the actual race (90% from the 1970 edition and maybe 10% from the 1969 edition) to which they added scenes filmed during long months of intense work at the track with rented cars thereafter.
The psychedelic 917 was in the 70 race, came 2nd with Larrousse/Kauhsen. It was not part of the movie filming thereafter thus any time you see it in the movie it is a scene of the actual 70 race.

Larrousse (my uncle in law) once told me that they could have won but were asked to hold position because Porsche wanted old Herrman to win. One of the 2 drivers of the psychedelic car was extremely lucky to survive a very high speed spin in the Maison blanche curves during the race without hitting anything: that section was narrow like Monaco but very very fast.

    Best regards,

    Marc

Its a lovely car....hard to believe it was a serious racer with that paint job. The standard Langheck was wild enough without a wild paint job!

You're very lucky to have G. Larousse as your uncle by marriage. I got the opportunity to spend a few days in his company, especially one brilliant dinner, in 2006 at the Targa historics. A memory I will cherish.

He actually opened up?! Takes a lot to bring him out of his shell...he did however have the best memory I have ever seen: sent him a microcassette a dozen years ago with a list of questions and back came the most precise interview answers of any I carried out....

This months Classic and Sportscar magazine suggests that Adrian Newey(Ex McLaren currently Red Bull F1 designer) has purchased an ex Filipinetti 512? Is this right?

If he has, I hope he has more luck with it than his GT40 at Le Mans and his Lightweight E type at Goodwood!!

Let's hope he doesn't kill himself with such a car. Saw him crash his GT40 at Le Mans 2 years ago................

Correct. I wrote the text for the car he bought and never saw a more complicated bio. Gave me a headache.

I had one chance encounter with him, 3 years ago this month, at the Dijon "Coupes de l'age d'or" Vintage meet. He was there on an off F1 weekend, racing something or other. I remember there was some sort of controversy in F1 at the time -should I say as usual...or will Max ban me?- and I literally bumped into him behind the pits between two team trucks. I recognized him and said you must enjoy a break away from from F1 politics.
He thought carefully for about 3 seconds, felt comfortable I wasn't some paparazzo and said oooooooh yes with a big smile. It was a nice albeit fleeting moment.

    Best regards,

    marc

I've got an original, near-mint 512S "Owner's Manual" as well as some photos of K. White and his 512S that I'd consider selling...
