You are the man, will call him today.

The undercover Mustang Sherif has it down as 110MPH in 50MPH as (PACE). Honestly though, the max I was driving would had been 70-80. Either way it has made my life horrible the past a few days :(

Even with a clean record, if you were convicted in central Virginia, pack your toothbrush. Standard in Richmond and surrounding counties for that speed is loss of licence for 90 and a few weekends in jail. Your lawyer may be able to work out a month or so of highway thrash detail in lieu of jail if you were a good boy with a clean record.

Well, you're looking at a serious sentence. I think, at that speed (even if it was by pacing and not by radar), any attorney will tell you that there's little wiggle room. However, you definitely need one, as there's a lot riding on it. Fairfax is particularly harsh.

You'll get 1) jail time (generally, 2 days for each mph over 90...so, 40 days...you'll serve 20...6 3-day weekends plus 1 2-day stint may be an option, but it's at the Judge's discretion), 2) license suspension for a long period (minimum of 6 months, likely, and probably longer), 3) a stiff fine (several hundreds...maybe $500) and 4) abusive driver fees (several thousands...but it may have been repealed by now). You may or may not be able to get a restricted license for going to work. Depends on the judge, prosecutor, officer and your attorney. And, of course, that's just the VA Court. Once they're done with you, the VA DMV will go to work on you. And, after that, your insurance company will pile on. Sorry for the bad news, but you probably already knew how serious this was. BTW, all of this will happen even if you have a clean record and are a +5 points driver.

    Good luck,

    CW

7 yrs ago in Va going over bay bridge tunnel , empty road sunny day . got busted doing 70 in a 50 . gave me 475.00 ticket and 6 pts. had to go to a must appear trial 4 hrs from home . judge was "kind" enough to reduce it to 3 pts. and 275.00 since i had a clean record. the negligent driving verbage stuck on my record and my insurance doubled over the next three yrs until i could get the damn thing expunged (a once in a lifetime thing) . the insurance companies still ask why i got my records expunged...lol

Virginia can eat me . I cant imagine if that happened to hard working low income person ( wait ...thats me?)

I have received many tickets in Virginia over the years, although none for 100+, and have always had a pleasent experiance with the judges. Never used a lawyer, was very polite and honest. Judge has ALWAYS reduced my speed or even changed it to things like failed to follow signs instructions. The judges as a general rule in Virginia HATE the automatic 20 over or 80+ automatic reckless statute, and will lower the speed appropriately if the office says that spped would be the ONLY factor in it being reckless. Judges drive too.

I do not see how you could only be going 70-80 and have the officer say you were doing 30-40 faster than that. What were you driving?

    Misoltanian,

I have a friend who got a speeding ticket similar to yours and used the following attorney:

    Mr. Kyle Courtnall
    Bose Law Firm
    703-926-3900

The attorney sent him to a speedometer specialist who analyzed his speedometer and found it was not working properly (if you know what I mean). The invoice stated he paid XXX amount but he actually paid XX amount. When he went to court, the judge reduced the sentence due to speedometer problem and reduced the fee because he paid XXX amount to the mechanic. His final court costs was only $167. Let me know if you need any additional assistance. Bill

I did call Bose Law the very first day I got my ticket. I'm working with Furlong, he is the partner and senior lawyer. I'm sure they all use the same shop, see if you friend remembers the shop and let me know. I owe you bro, I could use all the help I can get.

I've been to one of those shops for a ticket before.. they drove my car from the front of the shop to the back, and low and behold my speedometer wasn't properly calibrated! Exchange of some cash (Which they had a sign saying thats all they accepted for calibrations), and I had a notarized paper saying my speedometer was off.

Just curious, what road were you on in Fairfax County when you got pulled over?

Undercover police cars are very hard to detect. I had a VA State Patrol car scare me this morning. It was actually a marked car with the big logo on the side doors and trunk in the silver/blue color scheme but was not the typical Crown Vic and had no light bar on the top. I was in the slow lane on Route 28 near Route 50 doing about 63 mph keeping pace with the few cars ahead & behind me. He cruised up slowly next me to on my left side and I didn't notice it was a State Trooper until he was right next to me. Naturally I lifted on the gas and smoothly slowed to 55 mph. Having had the impact he wanted, he slowly crept up to the next car in front of me to scare the dickens out of them. Must be kinda fun for them.

I was coming from Mason going home. There is an exit you take off of Braddock road that takes you to Fairfax County Parkway. I came off the exit changed one lane to right lane, then one more to the left lane. I saw this White Mustang behind me (No Front License Plate, 5% Tint all Around). I gave the car some gas to go forward and pass the car next to me and be in front of him. As soon as I changed lane to right lane, the mustang's lights came on. What I did was wrong, I just hope I can prove to the judge that I'm sorry for what I did. This is my only reckless ticket, I don't even have any speeding tickets. I was so bumped out, I actually put my car for sale on that same day I got my ticket. :(

BTW, I've also tried the speedometer calibration/equipment failure route, but it fell on deaf ears. The logic being that while it may have been off, you should be able to estimate and judge your speed by the passing/closing pace relative to other vehicles on the road (or wind noise, or engine revs, or whatever method they like). And, you should therefore have kept your speed to within a few mph of the limit. By their logic, there comes a point at which you just can't argue ignorance. Don't know what point it is, and I suspect it's a little different for each judge. And, the magic number is getting it under 90mph. That's when there's no jail time. However, in your case, you were cited at 20 mph over 90 (even though it's still a reckless ticket...20mph over or over 80mph, whichever). Now, 90 mph is pretty fast relative to 55mph. But, 20 over 90mph is even faster, so if the judge doesn't want to see the logic of the speedo calibration argument, you're really SOL. So, basically, you pin your hopes on the Judge believing that you have no idea of the difference between 55 and 90mph. And, that's a long way to go to get to 90 from 110. Anyway, I just want to forewarn you that the argument has not always worked. If it does, great, but this is a well-known strategy. Well-known, and heard many times over by the Judges. Even if successful, it would likely not be a ticket dismissal. More like a reduction. No jail time, but still a reckless conviction.

Are you saying the cop car did not have a front plate?? I would mention that point to my laywer right away, as a front plate is required in the state of VA even for emegency equipment. He is clearly in violation of the law and should not be able to issue a ticket without being in complinance.
