Taking the whole family (wife and 2 daughters 17 & 14) June 11-25- starting in Venice-Florence-Rome-ending on the Amalfi Coast. Taking the train between destinations. Looking for some ideas of things we may not be thinking of while there & MOST IMPORTANTLY opinions on which place to take my (detour- real reason for going to Italy) Ferrari factory tour from? I did a google map and it said only 1hr 48mins from Florence to Maranello? Does that sound correct? Is this a drive worth renting a car for and if so any tips on a place to rent a Ferrari or maybe its poor cousin Alfa from in Florence to make the trip? Other ideas on what to do welcome!

Are you going to Bologna? That looks to be pretty close to Maranello, but from the looks of things all of that part of Italy is pretty close together by US standards!

I used that site for train from Rome to Modena and back. Trenitalia website does not work for US. That site uses the Trenitalia schedule for identical tickets.

You may struggle pre-book your factory visit tho I know there are tours June 10 & 27 - ask FNA / do a search

There's a wonderful new thread in the Mid-Atlantic region about visiting Maranello

    http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=197408

Some of the major car hire firms (Hertz / Avis etc) have special fleets in large locations eg Milan and may do you an Alfa (or a Fiat Punto !)

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Steal.

    *Or*

Hold on to your stuff. Tightly. Without looking like a tourist, or having family be made miserable by paranoia about theft by scooter...

Warn Italians; Susan Sarandon will be moving to Italy sometime after first week of November.

How many days will you spend in Maranello ?
There is a town named Sassuolo near by that has shopping for the girls , great restaurants, and a castle .
Let me know if I can make suggestions.

Address Via Tomacelli 147-152, Roma 00186

There are some signs and its kind of going North West from the station towards the Tiber and the big new Altar museum (Ara Pacis) by which there is a very cool set cafe / restaurants - its also prettry close (West from) the Spanish Steps

When you're traveling by train: take the train to Modena from Bologna and rent a car or take a cab to Maranello. Modena is only a few kliometers away. From the train station you can walk tot the city center of Modena for shopping.

When in Florence: rent a car and drive to a small town called Greve in Chianti (road name: SS222 or via Chiantigiana), the heart of Chianti winemaking. When you 've passed Greve, turn left to 'Lamole' and drive to the top of the mountain. There is a restaurant of a friend of mine called 'ristoro di Lamole' where they serve fantastic food and have a magnificent view over Tuscany. They speak English. See: http://www.ristorodilamole.it.

Enloy your trip through Italy, it's worth coming back.
