I moved down from New York City in May and besides the bad grass allergies, I'd say I've adjusted well to the weather change down here (HOT). But that weird weather last night with lightning arching and streaking across the sky (with no thunder mind you) and the warm then cool air got me thinking about tornadoes (and how you can't realistically do anything about them.) Most people I ask that are from here don't give them a second thought... Not sure if anyone here has experienced a tornado first hand; what are they like? What does the weather feel like during optimal conditions for tornado development? I imagine it must be a both impressive and terrifying event to witness.

If you see the sky turn green -- seriously -- take cover.

    I love big weather :)

Or at least be ready to take cover. Some of us are idiots and like to watch storms and react later.

    I love big weather too.

Welcome to Texas. Glad to hear you've adjusted well.

Also take cover if it sounds like a train is about ready to hit your house.

I feel less secure down here than Kansas because at least we had basements there. Best thing you can do is inner most bathroom, hop in tub, and a mattress or something to cover from debris. If a F4-5 hits your house it won't do much good unless you are underground.

Scientific fact that tornados are attracted to mobile homes. :D

Remember the Jerrell, Texas F-5 a few years back?

Not too long ago I saw a vacant, stripped out mobile home parked in a field on the outskirts of Jarrell.

I'd like to buy a beer for the guy who spray painted (in 3 foot letters) on the mobile home

I was in OKC about 15 years ago when a big one hit, I was in the bowels of a mall with dozens of other sweating people. Not fun.

There have a been a few close calls since then, remember the little twister that touched down at Preston and Frankford about 5 years ago? We were in my cellar that day. I remember having to go upstairs for something, and looking out my back windows I saw the trees blowing West, but the storm was moving East. Strange sight. As Tillman said, it was green outside.

Last nights weather was cool, too bad it didn't bring much rain. For what it's worth, twisters don't typically touch down in cities, but it happens.
