My steering column, right at the dash, feels like it is turning inside of a tight rubber bushing or something. Mildly squeeking/chattering while I make any manner of turns. Or could it be the U joints? I suspect it needs lubrication. I underlined some suspect parts in red on the diagram below. Has anyone attempted this fix in some way?

32,33 and 26 are a place for dust collection! Might be a good place to clean, however you'll have to disconnect the steering rack to get to it and its mighty tight in there. It could very well be that its worn in there. 12 looks like a bearing, which could be dried out and the culprit. Do you need the specialty wrench to get at that??? I can't remember...

My 308 and later my 328 made some noise. A quick shot of spray lube where it went through the firewall and also up near the steering wheel got rid of all the noise.

Too messy, I just used some private label stuff from the local Ace Hardware store.
