WTF with the a/c systems on these cars? I have gone through a bunch of old threads and am stunned at what I've found relating to the climate control on these 348's.
Mine doesn't work for ****. The system has been charged properly and I even have a new compressor. Yesterday morning I was driving home from a cars and coffee event and basically dehydrated myself and passenger. When I turn on my a/c it only blows on high speed or very low speed. when I hit the recirculation button nothing happens. when I hit the fresh air button the a/c shuts off. I also have a steady flow of air on my feet no matter what direction I have the air flow set on.
I have been able to get the temp down a bit today after spraying a bunch of debris out of my condenser fins. I also noticed there is some kind of splitter inside the intake that was only connected on one side. This piece was all warped and I believe blocking some of the air flow as well. I ripped the splitter out as I saw no use for it.
So if anyone has any ideas what could be happening with my climate control panel I'm all ears.

The only good thing that has come from this is my wife is starting to soften on me getting a 360...ya know something with modern technology that works.:D

The recirc flap usually breaks because of the crappy plastic pin attached to #7 in this picture:
    http://www.ricambiamerica.com/article_info.php?articles_id=294

The pin can be replaced with a Hill Engineering item:
    http://www.ricambiamerica.com/product_info.php?products_id=261210

The little actuator motor (#7) can bust too. It is easy to replace and takes about 3 seconds (once the trunk carpeting is removed):
http://www.ricambiamerica.com/product_info.php?products_id=254036 It probably breaks because the flapper door is, literally, about 4 pounds of steel. It is outrageously heavy for such a small cheap motor.

If you're not getting cold air and you're certain the system is fully charged with Freon, the controller unit might need some internal cleaning and Stabilant, as documented here on Fchat. If you're not certain of the Freon load, take it to a shop with hi/low pressure gauges and see what they find.

Finally, if the air doesn't deflect from feet to face, the motor #12 (from picture above) might be busted and thus unable to move the 'tambour' (roll top desk-looking thing) which controls air direction:
    http://www.ricambiamerica.com/product_info.php?products_id=254040

Lastly, the 348ts has a backup air conditioning system which usually works. Look upward for the two latches near the sun visors and pull hard. :)

Trust me, I feel your pain on this A/C. I broke down a few years ago and had Sport Auto (my local shop) do a pretty severe retrofit and fix. Now it blows icy cold in my car.

Hi John - I really haven't had a chance to check out the A/C on my 348 yet, but as far as the controls go, I recall reading in threads that they may work better if you remove the A/C control panel, and clean the electrical plug connections on the back that the panel plugs into. That's about all the help I can be right now, but hope it may help some :) Hope to see you next week at C&C. PS - I did pick up the replacement flap pin from Ricambi.

Thanks guys, I just took out the trunk liner and am starting to investigate the usual suspects. Daniel, I believe I read in an old post you left your liner out. I think I might do the same just for ease of maintenance.

Rick, I'll definitely see you next Saturday at C&C. If I don't get this air worked out I'll be easy to find. I'll be wearing a speedo.:D:D Maybe that could be Steve's theme...Euro beach party.

Great news! My actuator motor works fine and the plastic pin is in good shape.:)
Bad news! I don't have a flapper door.:( In the pics below you'll see the the hack stereo shop that put in the amp for one of the previous owners must have broken it so they could get their paws inside. So, now I need a flapper. This at least explains one of my issues.

    Hi John --

Well I think Daniel basically gave you all the possible scenarios. Hey Daniel, on behalf of John and the rest of us, thanks for taking the time to provide all that useful information.

John: I have to tell ya -- don't blame the car and think that the 360's system will be so much better in terms of cooling. My 348 air conditioning blew so cold I could make myself feel as though I were in Antarctica. I never had a single problem with it from a cooling perspective. Nor did I have any electrical glitches. I did, though, purchase that recirculator flap from Daniel :) Yes, hitting the recirculator button did nothing for me too because the OEM flap was broken.

I think Alex Traverso should be able to help you get that thing running the way mine did and the way that every 348er's does when working properly. You don't need to sweat just because you have a 348! I happen to think that the climate system was one of the 348's major strong points. The digital thermostat works way better than, say, the round knob that exists in the Testarossa cars or the Mondials. My opinion is that it really is a fully automatic and modern system that can heat or cool you to death!

    Regards,
    Dave

My 360 remark was meant to be a bit sarcastic. I know a few guys with 360's that are pulling their hair out with their so called uber modern technology. You're right Daniel laid it out quit well for me. I'm gonna take it one step at a time.
Hopefully He will have one of those flapper doors I need. Worse case scenario I'll just block the thing off permanently.
BTW I mailed you two Bollettinos last Thursday.

I think there really isn't a problem with CJ's AC. Its just all the hot air that he exudes is overwhelming the system. :D

nah...... its probably the AC control panel or the flap as mentioned before. I think Traverso is in Italy, isn't he? So I guess, it's Speedo time? If you want to try plugging in my spare AC panel to see if that works you can. But you have to help me do a slave cylinder in my MINI! :D

STOP. Don't spend any money yet.

You probably DO have a flapper door. I used to think the same thing with my car, because the motor seemed to work, but the door was just missing. Here's the 411:

The door has the 'other' part of your plastic pin still inside it, and it has sheered off, causing the door to flop to the bottom of the evap box. The door is 99% certain, laying flat on the bottom of the box, snuggly jammed in there. It is foam covered, and heavier that a mo-fo. Get a flat head screw driver, and gently pry around the corners inside that box. In mine, the door was laying flat, and fit the interior shape so tightly, that I actually didn't realize it was the door! I thought it was just the foam covered bottom of the evap box.

The doors are not available as spare items from Ferrari. The only one you'll find will be a used one from a wreck/salvage. I'd bet my left nut, the flapper door is still in your evap box with a sheared off plastic pin. :)

p.s. Get that took kit out of your car, and keep it inside your house. Leave a towing eye in the car, and everything else should be safely stored in your house where rain, thieves, and grime won't mess it up. The kit is far more valuable at re-sale than you might think -- and far LESS useful when your car is on the side of the road.

I will look for the door in the bottom as soon as I get hom this evening. I do have a sheared off pin. Is that all part of the hill piece or will I need that as well?
Thanks for the heads up on the tool kit. I will take it out and tuck it away in the house. You're good man daniel!:)

The first thing I did when I got home from work was check for the flapper door in the bottom of my evap box. I hate to tell ya Daniel, you're gonna be known as mono ball.:D It was a great suggestion and gave me a glimmer of hope throughout the day; but unfortunately that bugger is MIA. It looks like I'm gonna seal the box off and see if one becomes available. I still think it is a result of a moron stereo installer just pitching it after breaking it.

Any luck with a spare? I sealed the box off and it did make a difference in the cabin temp. Not frigid like my M3 but acceptable. Probably about as good as my 993 was. Well, maybe not that good but I'm trying to have a positive attitude.:) I think I might have the windows tinted with a limo tint to help as well.

When mine stops working, I'm thinkin' toggle switches and rheostats-maybe spiff it up a little with a labelmaker. Duct tape a clock that works on there, too.
