Hi gang, First of all, Congrats to Josh for getting his car cherried out at Bobileff! I'm lucky enough to live about two miles away and can swing by and see it! That dye job looks great! Now...I am looking to replace my factory exhaust with something custom, as I really don't want to go the Tubi route; it's just too damn expensive, though I know it does/can add to the value of the car. I'm not trying to "cheapen things", but I have a hard time justifying 3K plus for an exhaust, as that's roughly about 1/10 the price of the entire car! I've had a a friend/associate of Sean's )"Luckydynes" on here) look at my car and, apparently, there ain't much room under there; specifically, there really doesn't seem to be any "alternative" muffler makers (alternatives to Tubi and such) that make a size that will fit. So...my question for you fine 328 owners is: Have any of you put custom exhausts on your car and, if so, how did you do it? Bear in mind that Joe, the friend of Luckydynes, made the exhaust for his 1980 308 screamer but, apparently, there is more room under the 308 than the 328? Anyway...any help or insight would be very much appreciated. Many thanks, Scott
Go to a good custom exhaust shop, they can probably fabricate a nice sounding (but not nice looking) exhaust for a few hundred dollars.
I bought an X-OST system from Daniel at Ricambi and love it. Sounds like a ferrari should. Memeber SNJ has done a custom exhaust and his sounds great but he also tuned it to match the extensive engine work hes doing to his mondial.
Designer exhausts look nice and cost a lot of money. The previous owner of the 308 that was here used two 'Cherry Bomb' exhausts and has a muffler shop weld up a system. Probably cost him $500 total, which is about right for a good exhaust system. You DO want some back pressure, so do not fall into the no back pressure crowd, they are wrong imho. The 3x8 does not have enough real power to justify something completely tweaked/tuned unless you plan on 'spec' racing in a league. Oh, and the custom exhaust sounded great on the 308. Russ, known here as "snj5" should show up here soon. He has a wealth of knowledge and some designs from his Mondial 3.2 which will crossover to your 328. You can do a search on him as well. Good luck
Thanks for the reply, fellers. The fellow, Joe, who I have been speaking with is, in fact, an aftermarket "customizer" and has done numerous Ferraris "back in the day," but never a 328. Again, there seems to be a difference in the muffler-size and/or space between a 328 vs 308? Then again, I've noticed that the Larini Exhaust seems very nice and it's quite a bit cheaper than a Tubi... Scott
Scott, I did a custom system on my US 3.2 with the same set up as yours using a Dynomax #17277 and two dual Ansa resonated tips. It can be used with or without the single cat your car has, and has the 3" in which matches your system and two 2.5 out which can easily transition to dual tips. The sound will be a deep sound, much more so than my previous Tubi, and will be relatively quiet at idle and cruise (but louder and deeper than the stock muffler), but really sing when the throttle is open (a more baritone as opposed to the tinny high pitched tubi). This is a free flow muffler, so you can roll a ball end to end, so it will max your hp available. You will also lose 30+ lbs over the stock system, and the whole thing should cost about $600 - 800 installed. Here is a picture of a similar system I had with different tips, but you can get the idea as the can is the same. It's simple, reliable and works very well. Good luck with whatever you do. I was on their web site,and can not find a muffler like you have.(1 in 2 out).Aru you sure of the part #?
I welded up a DIY free flow on my 360+bhp supercharged '85 308 Euro using a Flowmaster transverse 2in/2out. All 2.5" mandrel bent tubes. It sounds very low and throaty at low rev's, and howls like an F40 above 5000rpm, I'm super happy with it. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login

here are a couple of flowmaster/308 systems. The simple black one was from the old tec threads. The second is on my 308 with two ansa resonator tips. Relatively easy to do. I had it done by a great local exhaust shop for about $650, including a ss heat shield. Thanks, Chris (and everyone else) for the replies and pics. To your knowledge, is there a size/space diefference pertaining to the actual muffler or the muffler area between a 308 and 328? As I mentioned, the fellow who is looking to do this for me is having a hard time finding a small enough muffler for the space allotted in a 328. This is actually what is causing the hold up in getting this done. Thanks, Scott

Interestingly, the tubi muffler for the 328, late 308 qv and Mondial 3.2 are all the same - the main difference with the early 308s is the single catalytic converter.
